Getting Ordained

Does anyone know the proper way to get ordained in New York state? We are getting married in Westchester County and my brother wants to perform the ceremony. We've called the county clerk and research stuff online but no one seems to have the real answer. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Re: Getting Ordained

  • Try your local board Jessica.  I bet someone there would have an answer.  :-)

  • I'm in Western NY, and the only resources I've seen are the online ordaining services.  On New York State govenment website it states that "other officiants as specified by Section 11 of the Domestic Relations Law" may perform marrieages.  That would include online sites- I know of an acquaintance who married some mutual friends who was ordained online.  Keep searching through nys.gov, maybe try e-mailing the department instead of calling.  Good luck!  If you need any info for NY resources, don't hesitate to ask!

  • Just make sure you call and ask if someone who does the online thing can legally sign your marriage certificate in your state / county... Every where is different ... I called our clerk / registrars office and asked about specific online places and some were recognized in out state / county and others were not.

  • my Brother is doing ours! We are in TN, what we have found really the only thing to get ordained is a "license" it costs about $40. There are some states that do not accept that and I think NY might be one of them... you would just have to do some research! sorry Im not much help!!!
  • thanks ladies! it turns out that, in Westerchester County, they do not accept online ordinations :(
