Bridesmaid Dress Budgets

I have a question about bridesmaid dress budgets.  I've heard that you're supposed to ask each bridesmaid her budget and then go with the lowest one, but how did you go about asking them?  I feel kinda weird just bringing it up in casual conversation, but I don't know if an email or something is too impersonal.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated it!

I started sending out BM newsletters (Word doc) and in the first "edition" it asked if $200 would be too much for a BM dress (most dresses I was browsing were under $200).

I think email is a fine way to reach out to all of your BMs.  It's the fastest way to make sure that each girl receives your question, and they can just email you back with a yay or nay, or estimate of a good BM dress $$$ range.

Have any of your girls been in a WP before?  Before I was in a WP or engaged, I had no idea what to expect to pay, so some girls might under or over estimate what they want to spend.

I didn't ask what their budgets were, but speaking from experience and knowing them, I tried to keep it under $200.  And I was successful!  :)

I also did not ask for budgets. I also did as PP and went for under $200. The dress line I am looking at I have seen the prices between $130-180. For my BM it hasn't been a problem so far.

Mgoss--the newsletter is such a great idea!   Most of my BMs have been in a WP before, so I think they know what to expect.

Narginia and GeminiJen, I'm glad to hear that you didn't ask for budgets.  I originally wanted to do that, but then I saw on the etiquette board that I should ask, so I didn't know what to do!  I think I'm going to do what you guys did and stay under $200, I'm pretty sure all of my BM's will be fine with that.

I left the dresses up to my BMs. They both choose a different dress within their budget. I think each of theirs was around $120 before alterations.
