Snarky Brides

Reception Music

Are there any songs that you or your FI picked that the other thought were ridiculous, absurd, inappropriate, etc.?

Some of my FI's choices -

Just a Friend - Biz Markie
Don't Stand So Close To Me - The Police
Bohemian Rhapsody - Queen
Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker

I've got a big ass so I don't think it's inappropriate at all.

  • FI would love if all we played was Madonna and Rammstein, but that's not gonna happen. He's not so into music or dancing so he really doesn't care what we play, as long as its not all country.

  • I'll probably be able to tell you later. Our dinnertime conversation today is going to be about coming up with a list of sample songs for our DJ.

    Agreed.

I honestly can't think of anything inappropriate that he wanted to play at our wedding, which is a good thing because we had an iPod reception and he put together the playlist.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. I don't hate the songs...but don't stand so close to me at a wedding?  Just seems all kinds of wrong.

  • Yep.  But i was the one picking out inappropriate ones.  ;)  I wouldn't have really done it, it was just a way for my to harass then FI into helping me with at least 1 aspect of the wedding.

He actually thought I was considering this for our first dance:

  • FI and his mom have joked about doing New York, New York as their dance because they're Yankees fans, but I figure if they do that, I get to invite the Philly Phanatic. We take our baseball seriously.

  • The only songs I don't want played are those damn group dances - like the Chicken Dance, Macarena, Electric Slide.  I know they're usually a hit and most people love them - but I can't stand them.  I think they're dreadful.

Well that, and if my DJ takes any requests from my youngest sister's friends for Justin Bieber or the Jo-Bros, I WILL castrate him.

    ^ditto.  Especially Bohemian Rhapsody.

As for us, FI and I agreed that we wanted strictly blues/swing/jazz for reception, and it's more background music than dancing music (although it's certainly danceable for those who want to), but we are doing an afternoon ipod reception with champagne and soft drinks, so our reception isn't the usual "get wasted and party on the dance floor" kind of event.  :)

  • I'm all for just a hint of innapropriateness at a reception. We played Baby I Got Your Money by ODB that I requested. Our cake cutting song was Sugar! by System of a Down, and it played long enough to get to the part about kicking someone in the crotch in much more colorful language. Then again, the dude talks so fast maybe nobody caught that part...

In other words, I have no shame and therefore do not think that those songs are inappropriate =)

yeah we put the kibbosh on these as well, I said under no circumstances whatsoever was Rhianna to be played in any form on any song by any artist. We also didn't want conga lines, but we played Suavemente by Elvis Crespo and Js goofy family members did it anyway when it was meant to be a meringue. ah well. they had fun I guess!

Don't get me wrong. I love the song, but the words are just sad. Instrumental would be very nice, tough.

  • When you guys give lists to the DJ, do you give a list of every song he is to play that night or just a representative sample?
  • We are only listing the songs for the entrance song, first dance, father/daughter and mother/son dance, wedding party dance, garter toss, bouquet toss, and I think last dance.

We will probably list a few others that we want him to play but we'll give him free reign on what else he plays.

Our DJ gave us a website, so we can do either.  The site has options so that you can select different genres you do/don't want and you can also go in and select specific songs.  We haven't palyed with it at all, but my friend is using the same company and said it's helpful for getting song ideas.

But our DJ seems great, so we trust him enough not to provide a specific list of every song.  I mean, I could do his job myself then.
  • You know what song was played at my friend's wedding that was oddly the BEST SONG EVAR!!! Paradise by the Dashboard Lights. I mean, I can see it realllly not being some one's style but it was SUCH a fun song to dance too and sing back and forth between the group of guys and the group of girls.
  • I don't think every song played at the reception has to be wedding appropriate.  I mean, I wouldn't want anything Grandma can't listen to without blushing, but fun-to-dance-to trumps awkward-if-you-actually-listen-to-the-lyrics in my book.

That said, Bad Romance is on our must-play list.

And Ball and Chain, because Social D always makes me want to dance, and I freaking hate dancing.

[QUOTE]Fortunately, FI loves Lady Gaga as much as I do.  He will randomly sing the Oh oh oh  line from Poker Face at me, lol.  (Usually slowly, the way Rachel did it in Glee.)

This just made me think of the upcoming Rocky Horror episode of Glee.  I'm surprised my FI hasn't requested Time Warp for the reception.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • I am debating Time Warp, mainly because I have seen Rocky Horror so many times and it means a lot to me.  It's the only line dance!

We are giving almost a full playlist to the DJ mainly becuase we are both super picky and have very different taste.  I am a child of the new wave/punk/goth 80s and am super clear on teh songs I want played because i don't want to alientate anyone.  We had a sample playlist made for us by a DJ who's speciality was RB/Funk/Soul/Hip HOp and he just got the 80s all wrong.

Guy was great for my FI, but awful for me.  We found a DJ who will work perfectly and knows both our genres.

We're having it out about some of the music though.  I want Sweet Caroline, and he's refusing.  I had negotiate for that.
  • We got two Gaga songs in, but I had to miss one because we were taking family photos. =(

I can't WAIT for the Glee Rocky Horror episode! My friend played Time Warp at her wedding and it was tons of fun! It also helped that she was a theater major and all her friends were theater folks, so it made it extra fun
