This is what irritated me the most about this book. The ENTIRE plot of this book is centered around this one event - the title itsself  is about this event but I just didn't UNDERSTAND why she withheld the letter. It didn't serve any purpose what-so-ever. Did she think Emma would simply forget about her overseas husband?

I think giving that letter to Emma would have given her some piece of mind.

But again - for this being the main event of the book it was EXTREMELY anti-climatic. I almost overlooked this entire event - until I realized this is THE event in the book.

What was taken from Emma in not knowing immediately about what happened? I can understand why she didn't give the letter to Emma after finding out that she's pregnant, possibly because she thought the stress could harm the baby, maybe? I agree with you Bright, this was the whole plot of the book and she didn't through with basically doing her job and delievering the letter to the expected recipient.

5- In the funk hole, Will says that "everything adds up," but Frankie disagrees, saying that life is a series of 'random, incomprehensible accidents." Which philosophy do you believe? Which theory does the book make a better case for?  I personally believe more in Will's philosophy of everything adding up.. Maybe I watched too much Oprah in my day and no longer believe that things just happen, but happen for a reason.

6- Why do you think Maggie's death compels Will to leave for England? I think that because of the war and the stories that Will was hearing on the radio that he thought he deserved to go to England and put himself in the middle of a war.  He definitely felt guilty for what happened to Maggie and not acting on the signs that he was given while she was giving birth.
