Re: Ring Insurance Help

  • We use Jewlers Mutual.  It was super easy online.

  • I agree with talking to your insurance agent who does your home/renters' insurance. When we rented, we were able to add the ring insurance for a very nominal fee per year. Now that we bought a house, it does insure jewelry up to a certain amount, but our rings totaled more than that, so we added on a rider to our home insurance.

You will need appraisals for your rings if you do not have them already. If your FI bought the ring, I would talk to him and see if he ever got an appraisal for it.

I think we are going to go with Jeweler's Mutual. From what I understand, they cover a larger array of possible things that can go wrong. And if you have to replace your ring, tennis bracelet, whatever, you can work with the jewelry designer of your choosing to get what you want, and they cut you a check afterward. With many homeowner policies, they replace it for you from one of their chosen jewelers, and it may be an inferior piece to what you had before.

I'm a bit of a control freak --- I'd prefer to pick things out on my own --- so I'd rather pay to recplace my own ring and be reimbursed later than just get something the insurance company decides is similar.

  • I got a rider on my home owners for mine. You have to go have it appraised or you can use the purchase reciept if you have one. It would have been a bit cheaper for me to use a jewelry specific insurance company, like the one mentioned above, but I like our insurance company we use and our agent, so that was just easier for me personally.

  • I have mine and DH's insured through State Farm.  It's under a personal policy.  We had to get our rings appraised and that was it.  I did compare their rates to jewelers mutual and state farm was ridiculously cheaper.  DH lost his band not long ago.  I called the insurance agent, she did some work, and then I got a phone call from a state farm representative that asked me where I'd like to work with to get a replacement or bid on a replacement from.  I chose which ever place I wanted, they got the quote and I got a check to buy the original ring back.

  • Mine is insured through our homeowners policy. We had to bring the receipt in and they determined what we needed. Our yearly fee added onto our normal policy only added $28.00 a year and my ring was valued at $4,200.00, it obviously is more expensive if the ring is a higher value. Hope that helps price wise for you!!

This exactly!! I feel the same way and my e-ring and wedding band are insured through Jewelers Mutual. I liked that they cover more possible mishaps and I can chose my own jeweler to have it replaced
  • I used Jewelers Mutual. As long as you have your apraisal, it's really easy to apply online. And it wasn't that expensive. And I agree with the previous posts, they seem to cover just about everything (except for a nuclear war) and you can use the jeweler of your choice if anything happens.

  • Agree with PP who suggested State Farm. I personally work within an Agent's office and we do a lot of business insuring jewelry (with the focus being on engagement/wedding rings). You'd want a PAP (Personal Articles Policy) and they're surprisingly inexpensive. I have my promise ring and four Trollbead bracelets insured and I think the cost is roughly 2.50 a month (depending on the appraised value of your ring). Best of luck!
