Just Desserts for wedding cake?

So I went to the wedding expo in Kitty Hawk back in January and tasted some absolutely amazing cake. I thought it was from Just Desserts because I had specifically saved their business card, but now I'm looking at their website and not seeing the Red Velvet flavor I tried, so I'm second guessting myself. Has anyone used Just Desserts, and would you recommend them as a bakery for your wedding?

I'm unsure if I'll have time to get back to OBX to do a tasting before the wedding and I really don't want to be wrong about the cake...

Thanks!

She does have red velvet.  Her cakes are AMAZING!  We're doing three flavors: traditional,  chocolate mousse, and carrot cake.  We've had 2 tastings with her, and I cannot wait to eat that cake again in June! :-)

I was not a fan of Just Desserts....I thought the cake was super sweet and couldn't finish the bite I had in my mouth.  We all have different taste buds though so what's not good to me could be delicious to someone else.

Just Desserts makes delicious cakes! They were very pricey though. I did tastings with just about every cake baker I could find in the OBX. We've book Sweet-e-pies for her (relatively cheap) and delicious key lime cake with fresh raspberry filling.
  • I am really sensitive to sweet cake, but I thought this cake was delicious!  It was a good compromise for FI and I.  I liked Argyles, he liked Great Cakes (sickeningly sweet - to me).  We would have used them, but I had already put a deposit down with Argyles while he was in Korea.  I love their cake too though, so we're happy :)

To answer your question, we would absolutely have gone with Just Desserts had I tried their cake before booking Argyles (Icing on the Cake is their bakery name).  Not sure about their pricing though, never got that far ;)

I don't find it be too sweet at all; I really dislike cake that is too sweet actually.  She uses fresh ingredients and you can definitely tell.  I agree on the part that it is a little pricey, but she's willing to work with you.  And she's MUCH more friendly in person than over email or the phone.

  • We did a tasting at Just Desserts and LOVED it! We did not love the price, however, and we ended up going with Harris Teeter and we'll do a cake buffet. Her prices are comparable to Great Cakes. They both gave us the same estimate but the delivery charge (to Corolla) was actually less with Just Desserts (which makes very little sense considering how close the two bakeries are to each other!)

Now I'm starting to wonder if I ate the same cake as everyone else....lol

  • Thats so funny OBX :)  I felt the same way about Great Cakes.  Everyone else seemed to love it and it just made me sick it was so sweet!

  • I thought Great Cakes was yummy! With the Sanderling elopement package, we had 2 options, but Rick loves Key Lime pie, so we were set with that cake from this beginning...

All this talk of cake makes me want some!

  • Thanks for the input! I haven't looked at Great Cakes so I'll certainly put it on my list to do some research on.

  • We booked Melinda of Just Dessert for our wedding in Corolla.  We loved everything we tasted and we too are sensitive to too sweet.  From what everyone (our local vendors) has told us, she's the best baker on the island.  She doesn't use fondant so all the designs are edible and she has a background in art and training in France if I'm not mistaken?  She's doing a 2-tier beach themed cake for us (to feed 50-60 ppl), with delivery to Corolla and an anniversary tier for around $500.  Hope that helps!
  • I had the best experience with Melinda at Just Desserts. We just had our wedding October 6th, 2012 and the cake was not only gorgeous (and one of my favorite elements of the wedding) but the best cake I have ever tasted. I can't tell you how many people told us it was "the best wedding cake they ever had". Melinda was amazing during the whole process too. I was totally obnoxious and completely changed the design of my cake 2 times and Melinda was so accomodating throughout the process

I must add this last thing because its now a running story/joke among my friends. We took a  piece of leftover cake home to our rental house after the wedding. Everyone wanted some. As my friends husband was eating the last bite, he accidentally dropped a piece on her shoe. He promptly picked up her shoe licked the icing off and proceeded with what he was doing. Other than it being the best wedding cake among our friends and family, they are now refering to it as "shoe licking good". I really could not have been happier with the whole experience. Oh we had the eclair cake with buttercream icing. Will post a picture once I get it from the photographer!
