Wedding Woes

help me phrase an email

Client asked if I did X. I did not, because I did not think X was necessary or expected. It is not something I can do after the fact.

Explaining that I didn't understand the requirements is probably not an acceptable explanation. Any plausible thing I can say besides just 'Nope. Sorry." to smooth over the bad news?

  • I'm sorry, X was not completed because it was not included in the project specifications.

    Client.

I'm sorry, X was not completed because it was not included in the project specifications. [If you feel that X is necessary or would add additional value to Y, I can complete at a cost of / at no charge.   OR  With Y reaching current statge, it would be impossible to complete X without starting Y from the beginning. If you would like me to reconfigure Y to include X, it is possible, but will require/cost/etc.]

    Regards,
    DG

Barbie would win, but there was no project specification. This went from plan to execution in about a week and was supposed to be "quick and dirty."  In my world, that means get good information but don't stress about documentation. There are entire books about doing things this way in my field, so when I say "my world," I don't mean my little world that exists 3 inches around my body.

Grr. It's a subcontract, too. If it were my actual client, this never would have freaking happened.

    Client.

I'm sorry, X was not completed for this project due to the time constraints and urgent nature of the job.   With Y reaching current stage, it would be impossible to complete X without starting Y from the beginning. If you would like me to reconfigure Y to include X, it is possible, but will take Z time/require/cost/etc.]

  • I would simply state that "X was not completed on this job as it was not originally requested."

    dear client,

i referred back to our original comunication, and X was not part of W, Y or Z, which all have been completed. if you need X, please provide the specifications so we can discuss what is required, and i will gladly complete this for you.

    sincere regards, captain awesome pants.
