GTKY All Saints Edition

Happy All Saints Day, everyone!

In celebration, some GTKY questions:

What saint's name did you take at Confirmation? Why?

What about your FI/H?

Other saints you have particular devotions to?

Were you raised "with the saints?" How did your parents teach you about them?

Any others comments on the saints?

What saint's name did you take at Confirmation? Why? St. Therese of Liseux -- I could relate to certain elements of her life, and appreciated her Little Way

    What about your FI/H?
    St. Ignatious of Loyola

Other saints you have particular devotions to? St. Peter, Sts. Francis, Clare and Dominic, St. Br. Andre Bessett, St. Thomas More

Were you raised "with the saints?" How did your parents teach you about them?
I wasn't raised Catholic, but I wasn't raised anti-Catholic either. My Catholic grandma always kept the saints kind of present. I am charmed by things like saints picture books, so I'm sure C will have lots of things like that as she grows up.

Any others comments on the saints? As far as I know, it isn't theologically vetted, but someone once said that the saints are praying for you even before you start praying for their intercession. I love that idea, and can see it playing out at various points in my life.

  • In celebration, some GTKY questions:

What saint's name did you take at Confirmation? Why?  Elizabeth.  I took it because i liked the name.  Totally stupid reason!

What about your FI/H?  I have no idea....is that bad?

Other saints you have particular devotions to?  Not a devotion, per se, but Philip and James are my birthday saints.

Were you raised "with the saints?" How did your parents teach you about them?  i just learned the basics about patron saints, and to pray to Anthony when you lose something.  pretty general stuff.

Any others comments on the saints?
    i found this cool link!

  • What saint's name did you take at Confirmation? Why?  I chose to have my middle name as my confirmation name, which is Dorothy.  It was my late grandmother's name.

What about your FI/H? I think his is his middle name as well, Paul.

Other saints you have particular devotions to?  My birthday saint Lucy.  And the Augustinian saints such as Saint Augustine, Saint Rita, Saint Monica.

Were you raised "with the saints?" How did your parents teach you about them?  We had saint books growing up and my grandmother had pictures of saints all over her house.  Saint Anthony was also called upon a lot in my household.
  • What saint's name did you take at Confirmation? Why?
St. Madeleine Sophie.  I liked her story and all, but I mostly picked her because she was beautiful.  I figured, they're all good (I mean, they're saints!), so why not choose one with a non-spiritual quality you like, too?  And I liked her name.  I know, it's bad.  Also, my favorite saint is my patron saint (St. Therese), but I didn't want my first and confirmation names to be the same.
    What about your FI/H?
    I don't know.....Ok, this just in...St. Lawrence!
Other saints you have particular devotions to?
St. Therese is the only one I have ever had a specual devotion to...as a child, she made holiness seem attainable.  I didn't have to do some big, grand thing, like be a martyr. Instead, I could offer up the negative things in my life, and each day, through sacrifice, become closer to God.  For me, that was just so inspiring and comforting.  To this day, she just makes sense to me, you know?
Were you raised "with the saints?" How did your parents teach you about them?
Very much so.  My Mom had weekly Eucharistic Adoration, and I always went with her.  She would buy me saint books to read while in adoration.  In Catholic school, we had assignments such as weekly saint reports...once a week, it was someone's turn to write a report about a saint that was assigned to them by the teacher.
Any others comments on the saints?
I love that we have so many saints.  I love when I read about a saint and I'm like "wow, that's so relateable!"  I think it's important to relate, because it makes us see that these amazing, holy men and women were normal people, just like us.  And that means we can be amazing, holy people, too!

  • What saint's name did you take at Confirmation? Why?
Martha.  She is the patron of cooks, and I really love being in the kitchen.  When I was doing research, the only patron of teachers I could find was a guy, and I didn't really want to take a guy's name (although now I'm learning about St. Catherine and I'm like, "Where was this when I was looking this stuff up?!")

    What about your FI/H?
I think he took Raphael... I'm sure I knew why at some point, but I don't remember.  He was confirmed during a Jubilee year (?) so I know he got to go to some huge ceremony with the Diocese of Austin (TX), which is pretty cool.
Other saints you have particular devotions to?
St. Francis of Assisi, St. Catherine (see above), St. John Baptiste de la Salle and basically any other saint who was also a teacher.  I'm also really loving learning about St. John Nepomuk, who is the patron of Bohemia (and Czechs), and we live in a huge Czech community (and H's family is Czech) so it's really awesome that we moved into a parish named for him and get to learn so much about him.
Were you raised "with the saints?" How did your parents teach you about them?
I was not.  I was raised with a pretty negative outlook on saints.  Yaaaaay Protestants!

I didn't get asked/requried to take a saint's name at Confirmation. Neither was DH...is it actually a requirement? If so, I'd want to look into it further...

  • im pretty sure its a requirement, itz.

    I wasn't required to choose a saint's name for confirmation - I don't think H was either, but I don't think we've ever actually talked about it.

Growing up, we ALWAYS prayed to St. Anthony if we lost something, but other than that I really never learned much about the saints.  I should probably do that!

  • What saint's name did you take at Confirmation? Why?
St. Thomas Aquinas.  I love how St. Thomas balanced being such a brilliant theologian/philosopher with being a humble and faithful Catholic.  He seems like he'd be a funny and interesting person to talk to.  And going to the University of Saint Thomas, I KNOW he was interceding both to help me get through school and convert to Catholicism.

    What about your FI/H?
FI took St. Luke because he's the patron saint of artists.

Other saints you have particular devotions to?
I love St. Therese, St. Francis, St. Peter

Were you raised "with the saints?" How did your parents teach you about them?

I too was raised Protestant and didn't believe in saint intercession.  Thanks be to God I do now.  I don't know how I survived without knowing I had a famil in heaven.

Any others comments on the saints?
I just wanted to add that I'm SO excited to teach my future children about the saints.  I want to celebrate saint feast days all the time with them, and teach them about St. Nicholas at Christmas, etc.

And I KNOW that saints are already praying for you before you even ask.  I know that's what helped me convert.

  • I didn't really know what saints were until 2 years ago and I'm not confirmed yet. But FI chose Erasmus, patron saint of sailing. I've always thought that was super cool because it's an awesome name and not a very common saint.

<div>I don't think it is, or if it is, it's one of those things that gets sort of ignored.  We weren't required to choose a confirmation name when I went through RCIA.  It was encouraged, but not required.</div><div>

</div><div>Edit: Also, on the subject of "Saint Fun Facts," at mass this evening I learned that our parish has a huge stockpile of relics for different saints.  Our priest apparently does everything he can to get his hands on them.  Although interestingly enough all the relics are primary, EXCEPT the relic for the saint for whom the church is named.  =)</div>

  • Mine is Bernadette.  I always liked her story and I still pray to her on her feast day and that of Our Lady of Lourdes.  H is not Catholic.  I didn't grow up in a very religious household.  My first MIL, however, was very religious.  She had a book of Saints which she read everyday, and I started reading it.  When she died, H and I were divorced, but I asked the family if I could just have that book.  Somehow, they never found it.  I am a bit resentful, but maybe she took it with her.  Wink
