Steam room or Sauna or Whirlpool?

Does anyone use any of these? My gym has all three and I feel like the heat has got to be good for stuff, but I'm never sure for what, how long to go in for or what to do. I'm addicted to icing things so this seems counterproductive.

Re: Steam room or Sauna or Whirlpool?

  • Any can be helpful if you need to relieve some aching muscles, but never stay in too long.  Listen to your body, and use that to determine how long (usually 15 min is enough to help), and try to be very aware of your hydration levels if going into a steam room or sauna after a workout.

  • Personally, I don't think any of them are good for anything but bacteria cultivation.

Also, sitting in them immediately following a workout might FEEL good on the short term, but heat increases blood flow which can increase inflammation and potentially make soreness stick around longer.  The jury is out.  It's gone back and forth for years.

  • J&K has a point.. It can shock your muscles and actually work against you.
I LOVE the sauna. I don't handle heat well, but it really helps calm myself down when I'm stressed out.
It also kicked out my headaches (usually from stress). I never go in one on a heavy cardio or heavy lifting day, unless I have done yoga AFTERWARD, that way my body has had an hour to calm itself down.
