dress too tight...help!

So my wedding isn't for another year, but I already ordered a dress b/c I found one I liked.  So I tried it on and it zipped but barely!!  I feel like I can't breath, eat, or sit in the dress. It is a rather form fitting dress, but it's uncomfortable at the moment. The bridal shop sore that it'll be fine and come closer to the wedding, they can "let it out" a little for me. However, this is a silk organza gown so I'm a little hesitant. Should I make them order me a size bigger (currently it is a 4 and fits snuggg..a bit too snugg).  Or should I trust them and wait until closer to my wedding, hoping it will be okay?  I also don't really trust this bridal store as it has bad review on alterations. Maybe I should take it to a private seamstress?  I know I can always diet and whatnot, but I'm not the type of girl who does that and my weight doesn't seem to fluctuate thatttt much (maybe +/3-5 lbs b/w seasons).

Re: dress too tight...help!

  • hmmmmm, at a four its not like you likely have much weight to loose, especially around the ribcage where I assume its too tight because of the breating problem. If you can change the order get a size larger, its easier to take a dress in than let it out without it being noticable.
you have time, but breathing is important for you r wedding day :)
  • If they order another dress for you, I'm quite certain that you would have to pay for both dresses, so I would try to avoid that if at all possible.  If you've heard bad reviews about their alterations department, by all means find a different seamstress!!  But before you take it out of the store, make sure you have a good understanding of their policy.  At the store where I ordered my dress, their policy states that once your dress leaves their store, they basically wipe their hands of any responsibility.

  • Okay, well, first question.  Check the receipt/form you should have gotten when you ordered your dress.  Are your measurements listed on there?  (Mine were, so I'm just guessing.)  If they are, check against the dress designer's sizing chart.  A lot of shady places will order a size smaller (or bigger) to get you to pay more for alterations.  Shady, but it happens.

Make sure that your measurements match up to what you ordered, or as close as possible.  They should have ordered based on your largest measurement.  If they're way off mark, eg- a size 4 has a, say, 36 inch bustline, and you're a 39, you should approach the store with this info, say they ordered the wrong size, and ask for them to reorder at no charge to you.  However, if everything is spot on, I would check with a local seamstress who specializes in wedding dresses, and see what they think about the fabric, and letting it out.  Don't have alterations done at a place that has bad reviews, it will freak you out, and may end up causing problems with your dress.  Good luck!
  • Order the larger size. Better safe than sorry.
