Luggage

1. Should we register for it? We don't travel often but it would be nice to have a few matching pieces.
2. What brands do you reccommend?

Re: Luggage

  • If you don't travel that often, you might want to stick with a company like Samsonite which isn't terribly expensive but reliable and goes on sale.

Victorinox Swiss Army is one of my favorite luggage brands (makers of the Swiss Army Knife) although each piece is pretty expensive.  Their customer service is spectacular so I think it more than makes up for the price.

If you register for a 5pc set or something comparable, be aware that it's probably a seasonal item so register accordingly.
  • I know you don't travel much, but you know what's a really big drag to buy for yourself? Luggage. Talk about a boring, bulky, expensive purchase that usually is inspired by need, therefore rarely on sale when you want it to be.

I'd say put it on your registry. You might not even get it as a gift, but if you've got a decent completion program at your store, you might be glad within the next year that you can get that discount price.

LL Bean is good.  If you have an amazon registry you can add it from them.  If you need something at a regular department store, I like Samsonite and Ricardo.

Also, you might want to check out TJMaxx - the one near me sells Samsonite luggage for a fraction of the price as other places.  It's last year's model, but I mean luggage hasn't really changed in the last decade.

So I would register for it, and if you get it awesome.  If not, take a trip to your local TJMaxx, Steinmart, etc. and see if they have any.  If they don't, then look into completing it with your registry discount.  PP is right - it's boring and expensive and is very necessary when you need it.  I would also start with a carry-on for each of you, and either one or two large checked bags, depending on how much you pack.  Whenever FI and I go on a trip, we usually check two bags, with one almost empty so we have room to bring stuff back.

I like Samsonite, but it is expensive, so if you don't travel very much, I would go with a different brand.  We registered for London Fog, it's a huge set, but we only registered for certain pieces (carry ons, wheeled duffle, wheeled business bag, large upright, and garment bag).  I agree with PP, a couple of carry ons and an upright are the "necessity" pieces.  My parents use one large upright for both of them, but FI and I each use a carry on sized bag.  360 wheels will also make it more expensive, if you don't travel much, you probably don't "need" these.

As PP said, TJ Maxx, Marshall's, and Steinmart are good places to look if you need to purchase it.  No one is going to know it's a previous model, and those stores typically get all the pieces in, but you can purchase just what you need or even cobble together a set from multiple stores.
  • Definitly register for it. I registered for a nice, kind of expensive, set. Thinking I would buy it with the completion discount later. Well it went on crazy sale (seriously like $200 off) and my cousins FI bought it for us!

  • My H and I both already had large pieces, he actually had a nice set, but I didn't have a carry-on. We registered for one carry-on piece and recieved it as a gift. It's Delsey (they sell it at BBB and probably other stores too) and I like it. I use it all the time when traveling for work.
  • We got ours from BBB. They have a large selection online.

  • FI and I already have Delsey luggage and love it! I'd recommend registering for two carry-ons, two medium-sized bags (25"), one larger bag (28-29"), and maybe a garment bag or business bag.
  • We opted not to register for luggage after I nearly had a stroke looked at the prices at Macy's.  Instead, I popped into TJ Maxx every now and then and came across a great deal for Samsonite luggage.  I bought three pieces for the price of one piece at Macy's.

  • We registered for (and got, and used) Tag Horizon luggage from Macy's.
FI's parents insisted we use it because we went on vacation in April.
So far it holds up well, and with Macy's coupons it wasn't crazy expensive.
And I got mine in purple!!
  • Delsey is great, and very lightweight. However, I usually travel with a DVF logo suitcase that I got on sale at Filenes Basement.  Register for it in a pattern or a color (and not red - everyone has red these days, its no easier to find your bag than black!)

While you are at it, throw a travel scale on the registry.
