Time allocated for dress shopping?

I'm going shopping for my dress for the 1st time Wed. I already have in mind what I want but haven't shopped yet. How much time should I expect to be in a store? Luckily all three stores are like 5 minutes apart.

Re: Time allocated for dress shopping?

  • It all depends...I was In davids bridal for about 3 hrs.  (I would have stayed longer but I had another appoint at another place)  then went to the next store for an hr there was nothing i liked there and went back to daivids bridal for another 2 hrs.  It will proabably be at least a few hrs in each store.

  • I only went to the two dress shops. The first one I was at for about an hour and half but I also didn't like anything. The second shop I went to I spent an hour in and the first dress I tried on ended up being the one :)

Good luck and make sure to take pictures along of styles you like.

  • It takes awhile to get in and out of those things. If this your first time ever, I would caution you, that what you think you might want may not be what looks good on you.  I had the perfect dress in mind for over 4 years.  Went to try it on and found out the style looked horrible on me.  It took me over 9 shops and over 50 dresses to finally start realizing what I wanted.

Maybe limit yourself to 2 hours at each shop.

  • I actually had to go to work the afternoon I went shopping, so I think I spent an hour at one store and maybe another hour at the other store? But the first one didn't have a ton of dresses (it was a consignment store) and in the second I found one I liked right away.

My friend loved the first dress she tried on, and then just tried on two others to be sure, so she was done super quick. I know some people go for hours though.

I have to agree with PPs that it all depends on the person.  I would avoid trying on too many dresses though.  It can get a little overwhelming.  I can tell you though to try on different styles.  I never would have grabbed my dress off of the rack.  However, once I tried it on, I knew it was the dress and when I came out not only was my family speechless but so were other brides and families in the shop.

There is a certain magic when you find THE dress so avoid writing off certain dresses before trying them.  It doesn't hurt to try and you may find your dream dress.

Finally, enjoy the moment.  Dress shopping went by way too fast for me.
  • The places I went limited appointments to an hour and a half unless you requested more time.  I think for a first time shopping try to a salon that's a pretty reasonable amount of time, especially if you don't know what you want.  It gives you enough time to try on different things without giving you the chance to try on too many and start losing focus on what you like and don't like.

If you're dead set agains a particular style, don't waste your time on it (like there was no way you could pay me to wear a ballgown), but otherwise be open to trying on a variety of styles so you can really see what looks good on you and what doesn't.  As someone else said previously, the dress they had dreamed about looked not so great on, so you really never know what you might fall in love with.
