Vendor Reviews (long)

Dress – David’s Bridal: A. I didn’t want something expensive and found the perfect dress there. The staff was always friendly and helpful. The alterations ladies were wonderful. They spent a lot of time creating a custom bustle for my dress that was very reasonably priced. The only annoyance I had with them is that the company prefers you to do bridesmaid dresses there and tuxes at Men’s Warehouse, which we didn’t want to do. They were slightly pushy about it in the beginning, but other than that they were wonderful.

Tuxes – Charpia’s Formal Wear (James Island): B+. While it’s much smaller than Men’s Warehouse, they had much more interesting and location specific styles. We had some size issues when the boys went to pick their stuff up but most of it was able to be resolved.

Rings – Hanchey Jewelers: A+. We had ours custom made at very affordable prices by Ashley at Hanchey. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the staff there or Ashley’s work. They were absolutely fantastic and we will continue to go there for any jewelry needs in the future.

Venue – Legare Waring House: A+. Julie Ann is absolutely wonderful. She was so sweet and so great to work with. It’s a gorgeous venue. We wanted to do a lot of the planning ourselves and they were very accommodating to anything we asked for.

Day-of Coordinator – Amanda Assey Lewis at Southern Chic Weddings: A. Amanda was wonderful. She is very personable and did a great job. We did most of the décor ourselves and she did a great job putting it together that day. Everything was set up well and ran perfectly. I would definitely recommend her to anyone.

Hair & Makeup  - Covergirl Brides: B. We chose Karen based on reviews on here and I really wanted someone to come on site since we were getting ready at the venue. I wasn’t totally impressed, because she took a long time to ever answer emails and I had to re-explain who I was and what I wanted any time I spoke with her (even though I always prefaced my emails with the location, date, and our names). Fortunately I took pictures of our trial run and brought them to the wedding because I don’t think she would have had any idea what we did otherwise, and we had to do my hair 3 times that morning because she kept changing it.  It is also definitely pricey, but most on site stylists are. But aside from some of the communication stuff, in the end she did a really wonderful job and I felt really great about the way I looked. I would still recommend her, but would just tell others to be prepared and not really expect a personal experience.

Ceremony & Cocktail Hour Musicians – Palmetto Strings: A. Again, they were great. Lauren is easy to work with and always had prompt communication.

DJ – Jay Maxwell with Jay Maxwell’s Music by Request : A. We had Jay himself and he was a great guy. Very professional, not cheesy, and did a good job gauging the feel of the reception. We had a lot of guests tell us after that they loved him.

Bar – Mix Charleston: A. Craig was very easy to work with and always replied promptly. We had a bar with beer, wine, and a punch we made at the cocktail hour, and a second full bar for the reception. They also poured our champagne toast. Would definitely recommend them to anyone.

Rentals – Snyder Rentals: A. They were the only company with a clear top tent in the size we needed. They are one of the bigger companies that obviously does a lot of business here.  They let us pick a bunch of the stuff up early, which was great. They arrived at the venue early and setup went smoothly.

Catering – Gerry Kieran: A++. Groom’s friend – by far the best food we’ve ever eaten at a wedding (or at many restaurants!). We’re still having guests tell us how good it was, and begging for his grits recipe. He has an omelet stand at the Farmer’s Market that’s worth stopping at.

Thank you for the reviews.  I'm in the beginning stages of my planning, so I'm trying get some information on vendors and see how others liked working with them.

Thank you so much for the reviews! This is truly helpful.  I also contacted Covergirl Brides for make up and it took an average of 4 days for her to answer the two emails i sent her....so that was a red flag to me so I decided to go with Pamela Lesch with Makeup Artist Charleston instead.  So far she has answered every single on of my emails within a couple of hours and has put together a portfolio for my big day already.

I am also going to check out Hanchey Jewelers since I need a custom made band! So thanks again!

Thanks for posting! Very helpful, esp that bit about Covergirl brides. After all the rave reviews I've read, I wouldn't have expected those oversights from them, and would've been disappointed with it as well.

Question for you about Amanda with Southern Chic--what services did she provide you with? Week of/day of coordination? I recently emailed her and got a price sheet on her, but it seems like soooo much money for her to take over the stuff I'm already doing anyway!

Now, who did your cake, and did you have a neat car to whisk you away at the end of the night? :)

We hired Amanda for the Basic Planning and Week of Wedding Coordination package. We wanted to do most of the stuff ourselves but it was nice to meet with her a few times so we could get to know eachother to feel more comfortable about her running the day, and she brought up a few things we may not have thought of just because of all of her experience. My sister got married here last year and they didn't have a day-of coordinator. It was a lot more stress for everyone involved and there was some head butting between the moms. We went back and forth over it because we are definitely DIYers and didn't really want to spend the money for something we felt we could manage ourselves, but in the end we're really glad we did. She had an assistant all day also, so the cost is really for 2 people, if that helps. :) She was absolutely wonderful setting things up and keeping everything on schedule throughout the day. Plus she stays until everything is cleaned and broken down, which was a huge relief to not have anyone have to worry about it at the end of the night.

We actually made our own cake. :) My MIL already had all of the pan sizes and decorating tools that she got at an estate auction a while back, so we just needed a couple of trial runs and it was awesome! We based it on a 3-tier cake we saw in Southern Living.

We went with Black Cab for our exit - Amanda gave us that tip. We just needed a ride from the Legare Waring House to the Wentworth Mansion downtown, and most rentals charge in 3 or 4 hour blocks. Black Cab does a 1 hr for $85. It gave us enough time to stop by at our house on JI and say bye to our dog & cat before heading downtown. :)

DRibeiro - we went to a few different places because I have an antique ring (husband's great grandmother's) that has scrollwork on it and a twisted setting - there was no way I could find anything to suit it. Ashley and the ladies there were absolutely wonderful. He hand carved my band to match the scrollwork on the existing ring, and did a fantastic job. You can tell he really enjoys what he does, and works with you to make sure his work is within your budget - without any pressure at all to try to get you to pay more than you can afford.

I'm sorry you had a bad experience with Karen @ Covergirl Brides. She did a wonderful job for me and my MOH. Glad it turned out though.
