Dress for a muslim bridesmaid

Hello. I am getting married in august and am having my best friend and my two younger cousins be my bridemaids. The issue I am having is that my best friend is muslim and am having a hard time finding options for a dress for her.
My plan was to find a bunch of colbalt blue cotton dresses and have them choose the dress they liked the best. I like the look of bridesmaids in different dresses of the same shade and my wedding is going to be fairly casual.
It has been diffilcult for me to find long dresses for my friend in blue and I was wondering if anyone could help me out? As I said, the colour I am looking for is cobalt but navy would work as well. It can be strapless or sleeveless, she is going to wear a shrug/jacket over it.

Cotton isn't as common a dress material for bridesmaids.  Your options really open up if you allow chiffon, though.

Can you post a pic or link to what you consider cobalt/navy?  Is it anything like David's Bridal Marine?  I'm thinking this shrug (<-- click) with a long jersey or chiffon dress (<-- click for examples) in Marine.

Exactly how much is she supposed to cover?  I understand different groups have different requirements?

  • I do agree that cotton is not common at all in BM dresses.  Have you thought about checking out patterns to see what could be made for her?
  • Maybe check with her to see what dresses she is most comfortable in.  I have a friend who is Orthodox Jewish, and she was in a wedding where she wore a purple dress of her choosing - she's super crafty so she made it herself.  But the color was the same as the rest of the bridesmaids, it was just a very modest cut.  Maybe your bridesmaid will have a few dresses of her own it could look like, and the two of you could go to a national chain and see what they have like it, and choose it in the color blue you like.

You might talk to her about it, see what she suggests.  A lot of girls where I live will wear skirts/short sleeve shirts, but they tend to wear tights and long sleeve shirts underneath.  It can be done quite well.

But I think your best option is to talk to her.

I'm surprised you're having so much trouble.  Most designers carry navy, and have long dresses.  Alfred Angelo has a decent collection.  Not in cotton, but in chiffon.  They also carry marine blue and mediteranean blue.  Both marine blue and mediterranean blue look similar to cobalt (to me at least)

I'm sure they'd have something you like.
  • Try Old Navy or something similar. You are discribing something like a summer sun-dress.
