What songs did you use for your Mass/ceremony?

I have most of my music picked out for the wedding, but I am curious what you ladies chose.  There is so much church music that I love it is really hard deciding!

It would be interesting to hear why you chose the songs you did as well!

If you go to the sticky right at the top of the forum and click on the link inside, there is a music section with selections some brides have chosen.

  • i walked down the aisle with my FI to ave maria.

i could not tell you a single other song that played as i only requested that one song and told them to play whatever they knew best and what fit with the relevant parts.

We did some traditional hymns (all instrumental)

Come Thou fount of every blessing
Lo how a rose e'er blooming
    O God beyond all praising
    How great Thou art

Our responsorial psalm was Shepherd me O God

I'm not a "Here Comes the Bride", "Canon in D" or "Jesu, joy of man's desiring" kind of gal.
  • Below is the music we picked. Maybe not so original but I loved it all the same.

Pre-processional - Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (Bach)
Processional - Canon in D (Pachelbel)
Bride’s Processional - Prince of Denmark’s March (Clarke)

Preparation of the Gifts - You are Mine (David Haas)
Communion - Table of Plenty (Dan Schutte)

Devotion to The Blessed Virgin Mary -
    Ave Maria (Schubert)
    Recessional - Allegro Maestoso (Handel)

  • We used:

WEDDING PARTY PROCESSIONAL      Largo from Xerxes

BRIDE’S PROCESSIONAL            Prelude to Te Deum

Responsorial Psalm     Psalm #128 May the Lord bless us all the days of our lives
    Offertory Hymn          The Summons
Communion Hymn     O Father All Creating
Recessional     Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring

Apologies for weird font/sizes, it's copied and pasted from my program template in an old email. We just chose things that we liked - some things my H helped pick, some he said I could choose whatever I liked. THe Summons has always been my favorite hymn, so I knew I wanted it in our mass somewhere
  • I have an honest question. This is not meant as a judgement against people's music selections, I promise. What is it with weddings and classical music? I just don't get it.

(Disclaimer: I'm speaking in general wedding terms here...I realize the preference for sacred high quality music in the mass, so our EF brides, I get that part. I'm speaking more about weddings including non-catholic weddings).

Most of the brides I meet with have that in their heads when they come in, and most of them never listen to classical music ever. Yet they want it in their wedding.
  • Seating of the Parents: "Air" from the D Major Suite - Bach
Wedding Party: "Largo" from the Four Seasons - Vivaldi
Bride: "Alla Hornpipe" from Water Music - Handel
Communion Hymn: "O God Beyond All Praising" ("Jupiter's Theme" from the Planets - Holst)
Recessional: "Tuba Tune in D" - Lang (it is still one of my favorites on organ!)

I would guess it's partially because that's what you usually hear at weddings, so that's the type of music brides associate with weddings?  I think a lot of classical music has a more grand sound/feeling, so it's fitting for a more special occasion like a wedding, even if it's not what people listen to regularly.  I know most songs that I listen to on a daily basis would be pretty inappropriate for a wedding :)
  • We still haven't picked any music.

I don't like any of the typical processionals, so I'm just going to ask our music director (if we can ever get in touch with him) what he prefers.  Hopefully he can come up with a good set of music (I like the music at a normal mass there).

The only song I have any special feelings for is the prayer of St. Francis, but I can't think of an appropriate place for it, so I don't know if it will get played.

  • DH and I love classical music.   I was an active singer in high school (choir, All - State, very geeky!) and he was a trumpet player through HS as well.   We both have a very big appreciation for classical music and the idea of wanting something other than that never crossed our minds.

DH's cousin was married six months ago and they were married in an extraordinary form High Mass with the beautiful choir.   Their mutual cousin has a beautiful voice and she sang with the choir as well.   I feel the tears welling up in my eyes as I just thinking about it!

my guess is that they know they cant use secular, and most of the brides are probably not overly religious and are always afraid of "offending" the non-believers, so they go safe with non-offensive classical.
  • Monkeysip- I've heard the Prayer of St. Francis used at the sign of peace and the preparation of gifts.
  • Carrie, I'd imagine it's because it's pretty typical, and because we can't choose the music we listen to.  I mean, I don't listen to hymns in my personal life, but I do have some classical on my iPod, and I'd imagine that's the case for most people.  I'm assuming most brides, like me, listen to pop/country/etc, which wouldn't be allowed at a wedding.

Erin, I also walked down the aisle to Te Deum.  I really didn't want to pick the same music I hear at every wedding.  I'd never heard Te Deum, but someone (I think Lalaith?) mentioned it on this board and I looked it up, and fell in love.

  • Resa - I also wanted to choose music that wasn't usually used, and I hadn't heard Te Deum at a wedding before that I can remember.  I avoided Canon in D as I've heard that at every wedding I've been to in the last few years, except for my sister's, and otherwise just picked songs I liked off the list that the organist game me of music she can play :)

  • @ Jen.... song at the sign of peace?  Am I going crazy or is there normally not a song during that?

During the preparation of the gifts, yeah I did think about that.  We might do that.

  • There shouldn't be a song during the sign of peace. Sometimes during weddings, when it appears that it will go a bit long, I noodle on the piano some background music
  • Prelude:  Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring (Bach)
Seating of the Mother's:  Ave Maria (Schubert)
Bridal Party Processional:  Canon in D (Pachelbel) - they like this one because it's easy to stop after the last bridesmaid or MOH!)
    Bride's Processional:  Trumpet Voluntary (Clarke)
Psalm 117 :  Laudate Dominum (Mozart)
Preparation of the Altar:  Love is the Sunlight ( Busarow)
    Communion:  Panis Angelicus (Franck)
    Communion Meditation:  Irish Blessing (Traditional)
    Recessional:  Trumpet Tune (Purcell)
I LOVED my music, and couldn't wait to get my wedding video back so I could hear it one more time.  Unfortunately, the videographer cut all the music (aside from the processionals / recessional) out of the video.  So sad.  :(
