Card box/ bag?

Hello, i'm posting this on the NJ board since the NYC board is usually dead. I'm wondering how many of you had a card box or bag at your wedding? The weddings i've been to, I usually handed my card to the brides mother so I don't remember seeing a box anywhere. If you did have a box or bag, where did you place it or who held onto it? I'm thinking of purchasing this item but IMO, it's a little expensive: http://www.exclusivelyweddings.com/Weddings/Elegant-Gift-Card-Box

Re: Card box/ bag?

  • At first I was going to have one made on etsy, the one that look like a cake or boxes stacked, but I didn't want to spend a lot of money on something I'd throw in the closet.  I came up with the idea of having a wooden box that we could eventually put photo albums in and I was just going to get a box at michaels and have dh stain it.  He decided to make it himself and it looked awesome at the wedding and it's become a great fixture in our living room.

  • Our venue provides a great vintage birdcage that's used for cards. I've seen others do this in the past as well.

  • Honestly, I took a Macy's box that one of my shower gifts came in, cut a slit in the top and covered it in wrapping paper.  It came out beautifully and cost less than $5 to make (just the price of the paper).  Unless you're going to re-sell it after the wedding, I don't see a point in spending a lot of money on the card box.

  • I made my own.  I bought boxes from marshalls spraypainted them and decorated it.  Looked great for pictures, although most people just gave me their cards.
  • I have one for sale (link in sig) if anyone is interested

  • We used a wooden decorative birdcage from Pottery Barn. As for NY-specific boards, have you tried Weddingbee's local board or NYCityWeddings? For some reason TK is the only active community resource for NJ weddings, but you probably have more options (and I can't blame people for preferring them - the board setup and interface on TK are a mess).
  • A friend bought me this one....

It is slightly more expensive, but I made a shadowbox out of it afterward.

  • I didn't want to use the typical mailbox or Birdcage that everybody has, so I made my own for VERY little money.

I made it to resemeble our cake pretty much.. I used 3 old cardboard boxes and covered them in white wrapping paper ($ 3 from Target). Then I wrapped Silver ribbon around each box, attached a few fake roses with some hot glue, and then used some decorative embellishments on each layer. I printed a sign that said "cards" on my printer and attached it to the front. I spent under $20 for the entire thing and everybody thought it looked amazing. I made it months ahead of time, and with the help of one of my bridesmaids, it only took about 2 hours to put it all together.

It was kept on a table right next to the "head table".
Here is a picture of the card box:

And here is a pic of the cake, as you can see, very similar:

  • My sister bought my card box from "forthemodernbride.com".  It was beautiful.  We had it on the table with the place cards.  There's a picture of it in my wedding bio.

I made mine with a shoe box, a set of three boxes from AC moore, 2 yards of fabric, exacto knife and spray glue. I am searching for some jewels and appropriate ribbon, so it is like 70% done. I think it will cost 50 bucks in total. It is pretty big too. Maybe 2 1/2 feet tall? I am going to put it behind us~ keep it safe. It is pretty hard to open. It has to be lifted from the bottom tier so it would be obvious if someone was tampering with it.

  • I was just thinking... someplace like HomeGoods might have something that would be cute and work for this.

A lot of times it is somewhere behind or near the Bride and Grooms table, so I never used to notice them before either.
There are so many inexpensive things you can use.  Our goal  is to try to make anything we use/buy for our wedding something that we can also use after the wedding, so for the card box, we found a pretty antique looking wooden box at a garage sale for $3, and we're just going to hang letters spelling out "cards" from the box.  Something like this (first picture is our actual box, and second picture is how we plan to do the sign):
