Moving to North Plainfield or Orland Park need adivce :)

I am a visiting bumpie :)

We are looking to move to either North Plainfield or to Orland Park.  Can anyone recommend what schools I should be looking out for or what subdivision they would recommend? I really want to be closer to civilization since I am 45 minutes to get to anything right now and we would like a bigger home.

I am originally from the Palos area but my husband works in Naperville.  We are looking for a 4 bedroom home and since everything is so low now we might buy.  I really only know that district 230 is good for hs in Orland, but I'm not sure about Plainfield at all.

If there is a really great grade school/Jr High/HS distict I should pick that is a HUGE factor for me.  I really want good schools.  I have heard to stay away from Oswego hs?  I feel like I really don't have anyone in either of these locations to guide me, so any guidance would help.  I've tried looking on a few sites that grade the schools but the info seems so arbitrary that I thought real people might have a better outlook.

Thanks again!

I live out that way.  Plainfield schools are pretty good but I would put them up there with Oswego (however, Oswego East would be my better choice).  Most around here I would be fine with putting my kids in....just not East or West Aurora.

I would KILL to be able to afford to send my kids to 204 schools (Indian Prarie).  I also love Geneva, 203 (I just LOVE Naperville) and 204.

First off, I work in East Aurora. You can get a great education at both schools (really any school). And our top students go to top schools (one of my Scholastic Bowl players who was in the top 10 of our class is in her second year at Yale). And a lot of our elementary schools are really great. While we absolutely have problems, a lot of schools have the same problems. And West Aurora is definitely better than any of the Plainfields.

Second, the Plainfield schools are not that different than from the Aurora schools. We have a few new teachers who subbed there last year who talk about how much they hated it there. Fights breaking out and no one doing anything to stop it, things like that.

The Naperville schools are awesome. So is Geneva. If price is an issue (Naperville and Geneva are very expensive), Batavia might be a good option.

Here is a website that had the different school report cards. You enter the name and then you can look up how the schools are doing.

Just keep in mind that at this point, the majority of high schools are failing NCLB because the standards are a little ridiculous (Naperville North is considered a failing high school which I cannot understand).

Also, make sure that you quadruple check what school district you would go to as the school boundaries are super weird. There are kids who live in Oswego who go to Naperville #203, kids in the same subdivision in Aurora who go to Waubonisie (#204) and East Aurora (#131) and Oswego (#308). It's really bizarre.

But I want to emphasize that you can get a great education at any school if you are involved in your child's education.

I'm from OP originally! There are newer/older parts of Orland, so it just depends. All t eh D135 schools (elementary-junior high) are great, but I guess I would be biased to the Prarie/Liberty/Jerling.  Centennial/Meadow Ridge/Century are the newer schools.  Also, know that if you live west of 80th and north of 159th (closer to Tinley) it might be Tinley SD there.

I can't think of a bad part of Orland Park, really. I grew up there, my parents still live there. There's the older house section of town, generally east of LaGrange and the newer, giant house section of town - out by wolf road. My parents live in the older section, 143rd and 86th Ave, over by Riviera Country club and its great - they have wonderful neighbors, well maintained homes & roads, and great parks.

A previous poster is correct - there is a very small section of Orland Park that does not feed into Orland Schools/Carl Sandburg High School... Instead they feed into Oak Forest High School and District 228. I work in District 228. Not sure of the actual boundries of that...

I understand. But you really can get a great education. The problem is the majority of students don't take advantage of their options which then makes us look bad.

Also, a lot of the schools are different. The high school I went to where I never saw a fight in four years now has fights once a week.

I lived in Orland most of my life and went to district 118 for elementary school (palos west and palos south) and district 230 (stagg) for high school. I was on the border over by Sandburg but went to stagg. Loved it :) always had great teachers and a great time

I'm a little biased having gone to McAuley and would tell anyone to send their daughters there...

But I do have a co-worker with kids at Sandburg. She is also on the board for the school district and likes to brag about her kids getting a great education without having to pay the thousands of dollars my parents paid to send me to McAuley...

I'm not familiar with Plainfield though.
