what is an ordained baptist minister?

I can't seem to find the answer online. I know this may be a stupid question. But my fiance and I have a friend of the family who is willing to marry us and that is what he is. Is an Ordanined Baptist minister allowed to marry any faith? Because I"m roman catholic.

Re: what is an ordained baptist minister?

  • An ordained minister, no matter what the religion is allowed to marry any faith under the law, however, some religions dictate who can and cannot marry you for you to be married "in the eyes of the religion" I am an Irish Catholic and since I've been married before and divorced I won't be able to be married in the Catholic church unless I seek an annulment instead.

I'd check with your parish priest for specific guidelines for your religion but as far as the law goes, yes a Baptist minister can marry you.

  • Thank you brookerich.. I don't believe to a church.. I was baptisted and made my communion in a Roman Catholic church.. and I haven't belong to a church since I was a kid.
  • I am Baptist and am actually marrying a baptist preacher. I don't know about other faiths or churches, but most southern baptist preachers will only marry within the faith they were ordained in. But if your friend is willing to marry you then he is allowed to do so. Your marriage would be legal.

Pretty much everythin Brookerich already said lol.

I would check with your minister first if he would do it with you being brought up catholic.  If he would (I am sure he will say yes) then see if anyone objects in your family.  thirdly, I believe the catholic church will not recognize your marriage... but check that too i guess.  My dad is catholic and my mom is lutheran.  He had to have a priest come to the lutheran church and do half the ceremony for him to continue going to his church.  Yes this was back in 1976 but their traditions are very strict and dont change much.  I hope that helps.

    Thanks melleiatc and CrystalDalton93...
I don't have a minister as I haven't been apart of the catholic church since I was a kid. According to our oficiant he can marry anyone.  I'm not sure I believe in being Catholic anymore, it was my parent's choice. I believe in God but I feel why do I need to subject myself to a religion and their beliefs. I know that is kind of betraying what I was brought up as. But you can't always please your parents haha. I just wanted to post and make sure that our marriage will be legal and not go years down the road and find out it wasn't, eek!!

    Thanks ladies!!
