first florist appts yesterday...

So, yesterday I went to two florist appts. The first one is owned by a frequent client at the vet hospital I work at, the second is the daughter of a family friend of ours, however the friend also works there. The first appt went smoothly as we discussed linens because she also rents many items/decorates.. To help save us money she offered to have us pick everything up the day before and return by Monday. We then started to discuss flowers. However, she didn't really show us much or get really in depth about everything. I told her my vision of green hydrangea, white anemones, orange ranunculus and plumosa fern. She explained that the ranunculus that she can get is not as big as the ones I saw in pictures but that she thought that the idea would look nice. She also explained that both anemones and ranunculus are somewhat pricey flowers but left it at that. She gave me a rough estimate without consulting the price of the flowers our anything and also offered that we can pick up the flowers the day of the wedding instead of traveling charges. So then we went to the second appt.... I went in wanting the same green hydrangea, white anemone, orange ranunculus and plumosa fern. I left with an estimate for green spider mums, green hypericum berries, white stock, orange alstromeria, orange ranunculus, which I had to basically pull teeth for, and plumosa fern which she let me have with no problem. My anemones got shot down in a heartbeat, saying that they are expensive and too fragile to use. However I've seen many bouquets with them in it.. In fact they are one of the most popular bridal flowers... Sure they may be a little fragile, but why am I not allowed to have them? The first florist didn't even bat an eye at this! The hydrangea fell by the wayside somewhere. And when I mentioned ranunculus she said it's too expensive. She kept trying to get me to use roses instead, and, no offense to you using roses, I don't want a bouquet with nothing but roses! I wanted something different! So after at least 10 min of her rose sales pitch I finally asked how much more the ranunculus is compared to the roses and she said "not much" !!!!!!!!! What the heck?! By all means I want the ranunculus then! And don't get me started on the berries. There was absolutely no way I was leaving there without accepting the berries, she even went back and brought some out. Then to top it off, she got smart with me! She asked how many spider mums I wanted in my clutch bouquet, I said maybe 3? She said she was thinking maybe 5. I, ignorant to how many flowers are needed in a bouquet of that style, asked how big the bouquet would be. She then snapped at me saying "I know you want the ranunculus, it will be in there!!" And didn't even answer my question... Also, her quote, which she actually did consult the price of the flowers, so it's more exact, was only 88 dollars more than the rough estimate at the first place! Needless to say, I won't be going back there, and it makes me sad because I got all of my prom flowers from there and I love her mom... Sorry for the long rant.. I just knew someone here could sympathize with me on how that second appt went. So, in the end, I have a better vision of what I want. I want green hydrangea, white anemones, some green spray rose, some orange spray rose, orange ranunculus, green hypericum berries and plumosa fern. I decided to go with some roses to decrease the amount of ranunculus to bring cost down a smidge. I also decided I like the texture that the berries add, however I will never forget having them shoved down my throat. My bridesmaids dresses are alternating green and orange. So those wearing green will carry orange spray rose and orange ranunculus with berries and fern. Those wearing orange will carry green hydrangea and green spray rose with berries and fern. Groom will have bout of fern, berries and ranunculus. Groomsmen with have bouts of fern berries and whichever color spray rose of who they are paired with.

  • Idk if your wedding is inside or out but I've met with two florists as well and hydrangeas wilt quickly. One florist said they have to stay in water to the minute there used and then back in water right after. I originally wanted them with my Calla Lillie's. Sounds like you had not so good experiences with both places. I'd personally look at another place. Someone who wants my business won't be giving an attitude, assumptions or dodge questions. Goodluck.
  • When I met with the two florist (which I don't think I am going with) they tried to get me to use roses FI didnt want them neither did I. I also wanted the anemone flowers in my bouquet and that idea got shot down too. They never told me the price but they just said they don't hold up all that well so I gave that idea up then. I must say this is the one vendor that I am struggling with the most. I say look for another florist to meet with to get all your question answered. Good Luck!!!

  • It's really important to find someone who shares your vision.  I went to another florist before I found mine and they just didn't get it.  Completely unimaginative and kept saying all my ideas were impossible.  Ummm okay?  When I finally found my florist, he totally got me and was amazing and taking my limited vision and making into something complete.  I left that appointment super excited!

  • P.S. I love roses, but don't want them at my wedding at ALL.  Just not what I had in mind and the first florist I met with kept wanting to add roses too.  What is with florists?  I'm not using any roses but I am using hydrangea.  I'm getting married and having my reception all indoors though, so I guess they won't wilt.  On the other hand, I've been to tented weddings that had hydrangea and it looked great all night.

  • I'm so sorry! When I went to meet with the lady who is decorating my wedding she is also going to be the one who will be the go between with me and a florist I told her that calla lilies were my favorite and that I wanted them incorporated in my bouquet. She shot me down right away saying that they were too formal for the dress I have and that it's so hard to find them all in one size. I've seen formal and informal weddings with calla lilies!

I wasn't trying say something bad about them I wanted them in my bridal bouquet took home a sample an I kid you not within 3 hrs they were drooping down ... when I looked up online summer season isnt good on them. If there in water all day they will be fine but they do wilt quickly. If there part of your centerpieces you should be fine then.
  • I feel you! I have gone to five florists and all of them have different options about anemones, here is the pic of my bouquet. A majority of them say that they are hard to get in white with black centers, they are very fragile and will die easily or they are very expensive and I should try to use silk ones, which I don't want to do. I want to check out a few more florist because I have my heart set on annemones and I haev seen several picutres on line with brides usuing them so I dont know why floristis are beign so difficult!

  • Thanks everyone! The ceremony will be outside, but the ceremony should only last about a half hour and then we are allowing about an hour for pictures then when we go to the reception, which everything is being held at the same place, they will more than likely sit in water the rest of the evening. May in western pa can sometimes be cold or sometimes be hot.. It's a hit or miss but I was being hopeful that the hydrangea would do ok for an hour and a half out of water.. For the anemones I agree that they are probably a fragile flower but how come everyone else in the world can have them but I can't? Well, you know what I mean. I think I'm going to talk to the first florist again because she is really nice and really liked my idea at the time. I'll talk to her some more and if I don't like the direction things are going I'll go elsewhere. She is preferred by a lot of people in town, and her work is very nice, she just didn't get too in depth with the flowers during the consult, unlike the second one who wanted me to tell her exactly what I needed right then and there. The first one let it open that there can be changes and adjustments. Also, you say white with black centers are hard to come by.. Which are easier? I've seen pics of green centers but read they are the rare ones.

  • I have also been to two florist. I went in knowing specifically what I aw Ted as far as centerpieces. I dont like roses and they both kept trying to put them in my bouquet. It took the first florist two weeks to give me my estimate which by the way is more than 4k. The second one I haven't gotten it back but I know it's more cause she kept trying to add things I didn't want
