The Pros?? Reviews?

(This message is also posted on the phttography/video board, but I wasn't sure which board would be most helpful.  Thanks in advance!)

Hi Everyone,
I recently received an email from The Pros and was wondering if anyone had ever booked their wedding services through them.  Their website seems very well organized, their prices are perfect for our budget, and everything seems to check out.  I did a little extra research and found that they have been awarded "Best of The Knot" along with some other "best of's".  Still, it all seems too good to be true.  Has anyone here had any personal experience?

I had initially thought about using them, but if you look at their reviews, some of them are awful.  I guess when you use a photog from that site, they give you the raw photos - you don't get any editing or touch ups.

In my experience, some of the photogs that are on that site also have their own sites.  You just have to be willing to do some research and sleuthing to find them.  It may be better to contact them directly to see if a package they would provide would come with editing and photoshop.

  • They are jacks of all trades and masters of none.  They have really awful reviews.  A friend of mine hired them and still regrets it 3 years later.  They ruined his pictures so badly that him and his wife had to do a reshoot a few months later.  There is no audio on their video and when they complained about it they were told it would be $1500 extra to fix it. Stay far away.

  • We briefly looked at them but decided against them, even if their prices were super cheap. If I'm remembering it correctly, they have a ton of photographers on one website and some good but some are truly awful. You'd honestly be better off finding a photographer you like, even if they are out of your price range, and seeing if they can work with your budget. If not, keep looking.

If you have the budget to hire trained professionals who are able to show you entire albums (not best-of shots) that is what I would recommend.  If you don't have the budget, after COPIOUS research (I literally reviewed 35 different  photographers including sending out feeler e-mails), then before hiring anyone from The Pros or similiar, I'd actually recommend hiring a graduate photography student from a local art school.  Be sure to also get references, and review their portfolio, and ensure they have reliable, working transportation and a current license in good standing (you don't want them to be unreliable and that's a big issue for students - no ride or trying to make things work with public transit - I went to college at The Mass. College of Art in downtown Boston so I know what I'm talking about.)  If you want to try this, contact the dept. heads of the photo dept. and ask them to connect you with students that they know from personal experience are good people (you don't want anyone with personality issues/mental health issues/addiction issues) and who are also good artists.  See if you can interview at least 3.  I bet you can match the pricing of The Pros (and get far better work, with many artistic shots).

    Good luck!
