April 2013 Weddings

Poll: Are you having favors?

FI and I have been working on ours this weekend. I'm from Kentucky and FI and I both enjoy a Kentucky soft drink, Ale 8 One. It's basically ginger ale. So we have it in glass bottles (already cleared with the reception venue) and have been working this weekend to remove the labels and all the adhesive left behind.

We made new custom labels on Vistaprint with our names and wedding date. We are also making the favors double as escort cards by using business cards (with a design, and free!) to write the name and table number, and we'll just attach the card to the bottle with twine.

Our wedding planner is convinced combining the two is a bad idea because if the bottles are on the tables, they'll ruin pictures. I doubt anyone will notice, and even if they aren't perfect, I'm totally over it. We just want them to be done!

I'm just curious if and what everyone else is having for favors. :)

Re: Poll: Are you having favors?

  • LOVE your idea. So cute! I've seen bottled drinks doubled as escorts/favors before and I just love it.

We decided to do a photobooth and our guests can have a copy of the strips as a mini favor.

  • We're doing favors. We're doing stemless wineglasses with our logo on them and then putting a little tulle packet of jordan almonds in there just so they're not empty. We kind of stumbled into a wine "theme" for our wedding so it fits in there. we're doing wine bottle table numbers (took the labels off wine bottles and designed and printed our own individual labels - each one different), and doing escort cards made of business cards stuck into wine corks. We actually are huge wine people (and went to a winery the day we got engaged - before he popped the question) so it fits us.

I think your favors sound awesome and personal. Personally, I also think that a photo with all the bottles on the table could turn out totally adorable.
  • I really wanted a photobooth! It just didn't make it into the budget haha. Oh well. I'm sure there will be plenty of cameras clicking - just no funny hats to go with them :) I LOVED it at my friend's wedding and keep the pics at my desk at work as a constant memory of the fun we had that day! Everyone will love it!

And I love how your wine "theme" really fits your relationship and story together. I really love almonds, so I'm kinda jealous on that part. :)

Now we just need people to return their RSVPs so we can crank these things out!

  • We are using silver luggage tags that will double as escort cards and favors.  They've got the typical contact information card in them but on the other side of the card is a line for the guest's name and table #.  I'm actually hoping to use place names instead of table numbers to go with our travel theme, so I might have to get some blank index cards, cut them in half and slide them in over the original contact info cards so guests can still use the tags after the wedding.

Ha well if you want to include them somewhere, we got a ton for a great price from nuts.com and they are delicious!

And thanks. We really never intended to have a theme. But then I saw the escort cards on a website and wanted to do it. Then FI wanted to put wine bottles on the table and we thought "oh, that'll go well with the escort cards." Then I decided I wanted wine glasses because it'd be something people use. It was only after all these separate decisions that we were like "oh...wait...this is rather thematic..."
  • We are doing 2 favors and one of them is doubling as a placecard which is a luggage tag and we are doing a traditional italian favor which is the white almonds wrapped in a handmade lace dollie from italy.

  • Im from pittsburgh where the pittsburgh popcorn co. is big... we are doing a popcorn bar... think candy bar only with 6 unique flavors of popcorn... FI ikeeps trying to talk me into jalepano flavored popcorn!!  Luckily, I found out they cant do that flavor in big batches.
  • Everyone has such cute ideas. We are doing blue golf tees with our names and wedding date on them in blue organza bags. Both of our families really enjoy golf and will be playing in Mexico. We also have wine stoppers with silver starfish on top, which fit with our theme nicely. We'll be giving a wine stopper to each couple.

    Anniversary
  • We are doing votive candles with an led tealight in them. Originally they were going to escort cards too, but our venue checks people in so there is no need for the escort card part. They'll just be at each place setting now.

  • Oh yea, FI is from Pittsburgh so we'll have a cookie bar, of course.  I'm getting some takeout boxes so people can take cookies home if they'd like to.
  • Just doing gourmet popcorn bags to go with the baseball theme (we wanted to do cracker jacks as that seemed more obvious ballpark treat but venue won't allow them).  And we are doing a photobooth that people can take the photo strips home with them.

As a photographer, my .02 is that the more personalized items and decor around the better so I don't understand your wedding planner's comment that it would ruin photos.  I disagree 100% - I think your idea sound cute and will look excellent!

We're doing 4 Hershey's miniatures with custom labels in a clear box.  Each miniature will have a different photo of our destination wedding location.  In the clear box will be a card that will serve as an escort card, so they'll be displayed with table numbers up and then when they're flipped over, there's the favor.

We're also doing pretty nice out of town gable boxes for everyone, so I don't feel so bad giving just 4 little pieces of candy for a favor.

For those who are removing labels, please know that this is illegal according to most companies' rules.  Also, any item that will be consumed HAS to have an ingredient list on it, according to the FDA.  In the world of custom favors, there are HUNDREDS of stories about companies finding out and suing people - and winning.  Yes, the odds are small that you'll get caught, but you never know who knows who in a 6 degrees of Kevin Bacon sort of way.  Just something to think about.

  • We're doing small jars of locally produced honey, with a personalised sticker on the lid with our names and date. I figured it would be a great souvenir for our families who are travelling, as well as our more local friends.
  • We are having a photobooth and using the bookmark photo holders as place cards and favors.

We're doing mini bottles of liquor (Jameson and Beam Black, our favorites) for those of age and drinkers. For underage and non-drinkers, I found bottles of the Jelly Belly Soda Pop Shoppe jelly beans, which come in plastic bottles just like the mini liquor bottles and look like soda bottles. Very cute! Anyway, I'm planning on doing the same thing--I bought some cardstock and I'm going to print out names and table numbers on the cardstock and cut them to size, then punch a hole in it and tie it to the bottles with ribbon.

I don't think it will "ruin the pictures", whatever that means--I'm not sure what you're wedding coordinator is getting at. I thought pictures of the bottles all lined up would be cute. I do think you might have trouble using business cards because they're a bit large. We're cutting ours to about half that size in height (same length, though). You might consider printing two names on one card and slicing it in half with a paper cutter.

Can you tell me where you got the photo holders? I keep debating on shot glasses or something to put the pictures in like photo coasters or something similar. The shot glasses come out cheaper so they are winning so far lol

If they're empty, it doesn't matter.  The FDA only requires ingredient lists if you will be eating or drinking something, so that people with various allergies are forewarned about what they're putting into their bodies.  It's a CYA type of thing so that nobody can sue the maker of the food/drink if they have an allergic reaction that they didn't know about because the ingredients weren't put on the bottle.

Cute favors! We are having very basic favors. Just hershey kisses in an orange organza bag, with a little note on it that says "A heart full of hugs, a life full of kisses, now D and H are mr and mrs" LOL. Just a little something I could afford that they could munch on. Also, we have a little tile picture holder that is holding the namecards, so they can take that home too which is also a favor I guess.

  • Kind of - we are doing Hershey's Kisses as well, and bubbles.  Those are kind of going to be the favors unless I find something cute and affordable.

ChiGirl2013 --  Sure hope this isn't an issue. I asked the contact person at Ale 8 One if they could run custom labels and they said no (unless you're ordering like a million bottles haha). Granted, I'm sure she wasn't part of the legal dept, but I would hope if it was a major liability they would say something! But I can see where it's possible that someone could totally screw someone over for it. The top of the bottle and the side of the glass bottle do say Ale 8 One....so if the person is familiar with the item, they'll know it's OK. If not familiar, hopefully they'll Google it or just not drink it? Guess we'll have to take our chances.

von1976 - I think our planner means that if the bottles are escort cards, people will take the whole bottle to their seat and leave them on the tables during the evening. I guess she's concerned they will ruin pictures if people are taking pictures of the table...or people near the table? I don't know. I figure if it's a professional photographer, she will focus on the people and you won't even notice the bottles. And if they are there, then whatever - people will just forever remember what we had as favors, I guess.

  • We are also having 2 favors. My FMIL is making these birdcages with two doves inside, then putting vines and flowers around the birdcage. It will then have a ribbon with mine and my FIs names and our date, April 12, 2013. Then the escort cards I am making are the second.
