issue depositing checks?

I have already received a few checks as gifts from people who won't be attending the wedding.  Some, however, were made out to "Mr & Mrs Newlastname".  I won't change my name til after the wedding.... so... how can I legally deposit this?  We do not have a joint account yet, so can I even deposit it at all since it says "and"?  Lots of conflicting advice out there... I am not a risk-taker and don't want to just try it in an atm since apparently the new ones reject checks that aren't in the same name as the account anyway.
Anybody else run into this?  Advice?
Thanks ladies:)

Re: issue depositing checks?

  • I just had my FI deposit them in his account; I'm assuming it goes according to your bank but HSBC allows it. His name is already on that account so no worries there :

  • i agree.  even if you both have to sign it, just go in and ask the teller if nothing else.  i would think that one of you "signing it over" to the other would suffice.

my bank knows us both personally, and we have a joint account, so i don't see it being a problem. (yay small towns!)

We got one check, the only check so far, and it was written to Fawn and Chad. I just signed it and he is going to deposit it. We haven't tried yet, but they should take it. If it has his last name on it, I would have him cash it. I don't know if they would let you cash it with it written that way?

  • I work at a a bank as a teller, each bank has different rules, but I believe ours are what most do.  If the check is made out to both of you and the account it is going into only has one name then you both need to go in to deposit.  The teller will need to input your id because basically you are giving up the accessability of the money and signing the check over to someone else.  If it's made out to You & FI Last name you need to sign what it says first (spelled incorrectly and all) then spell your legal name.

  • You have to both sign it. FI with his full name (obviously), you with your current name, and then right "for depsoit only" underneath that.
  • FI are in the process of combining finances and he signed his last paycheck for me to deposit in my (soon to be ours but still all in my name) savings accnt and i deposited it in the atm with his name on it and mine nowhere to be found and it took it. that was BOA, but it was signed by him... i didn't think it would go through and made me a little nervous that it did with no problems, good for us but bad if you ever loose a signed check! hope it works out!

<div>The ATM can make the funds available for you, but when your bank goes to collect the funds from the bank the check is written from the issuing bank can deny the relase of funds if they feel the money is not going to the person the check is made for.  That is why I suggest both going int whith your id's, so when the bank goes to collect the funds there are no issues.</div>
