Cake question....

Just curious when ordering your wedding cake are you ordering enough to feed all of your guest or are you estimating? The reason I ask this question is because most of weddings that I have attended they had tons of cake left over. I think as of now we are ordering ours to feed all of our guest. Thanks for the input!!!

Re: Cake question....

  • We are ordering enough for everyone.  We are doing a smaller cake with sheet cake to be cut and served separately.  We're also doing a separate dessert of chocolate cherries jubilee, so I guess we might have leftover cake.  I feel like better safe than sorry.

  • We are doing 2 seperate cakes as well, 1 is a display cake that FI's sister will make, only the 3rd tier will be edibile and then we are going to order a slab cake to be cut and served to our guests. I think we will be ordering it to feed all our guests.

  • We're planning on 140-150 guests after everyone's RSVP'd.  We're ordering 182 slices of cake.  That's the closest we can get to the 175 we originally wanted (due to how the cakes are cut).  If there's cake left over?  That's fine.  Our families will eat it.  And so will we.

We just put the deposit down on the cake.  The cake itself will make 130 slices, but once we finalize the guest list, we'll order kitchen cake as well.  The cake is already 4 tiers and we didn't wanna do 5.  Plus kitchen cake is cheaper and once cut, there really is no difference with our baker between the kitchen cake and tabletop cake.

Our baker told us that if we do more than one flavor, to order extra cake because people will want to try the different flavors.  So we stuck with one flavor.  And I mean some people may want second slices anyway.

  • Honestly I'm thinking of ordering just enough for people who RSVP I'm also considering candy buffet and if I go that route then I'll end up ordering less.

  • Not set in stone yet, but the idea is to order a variety of one tier cakes, all in different flavors. Probably will have a place to mark your choice when mailing back the RSVP in hopes of having everyone end up with the flavor they want and not running out if one is more popular than the others. I know this will mean we have to order more servings of each, in case people change their minds day of, but FI really liked serving a variety. So I guess my answer is that we will actually be ordering more servings than we need. I guess I should be glad wedding cake freezes well, lol.

  • FSIL had a *ton* of cake left over. I think a lot of it got tossed. I'm really not sure how they ordered their cake though.

We're going to try and get the closest amount to our guests as possible. Once we receive all of the rsvp's, we'll call back with a final headcount. Obviously they probably won't be able to get an exact number of slices, so whatever is the closest while having enough.

  • I guess I am in the minority of ordering less cake than people. We are having a dessert bar too and I dont want to have left over cake hanging around. We haven't really looked into prices yet since I'm sure that will influence our final decision.

  • We're doing cupcakes, I'm not going to order too many. They can be pretty tempting and I don't want to be a huge bride lol
  • our guest list is 80 people. We are getting cake to feed 50 and pie to feed 50.

When we went in for our cake consult, they asked if we were having a cookie table because that would influence the amount of cake that would likely be eaten. If we were, we should probably order less cake; if we weren't, we should probably order a little more.

So I would probably mention it to the bakery that you go with if you are doing a dessert bar as they should have a good idea on the amount you should buy.
