Picking a DJ

So we met with two DJ's this week.

Monday we met with a guy who owns the Production Company. Its his own business and does this professionally. He was super nice, obviously had all the appropriate credentials and was pretty legit. However, he's got prices to match.

Then last night we met with two guys that the coordinate of another venue recommended to us. They have day jobs and DJ on the side. They are both club DJ's who've also done weddings. We are looking for a "club" atmosphere for the dance part of the evening. SO they fit right into our idea of what we want to do. They are much cheaper. AND Have even DJ'ed our venue before.

So now I feel stuck. I'm not sure who to choose. I love to save money and when planning a wedding saving anywhere I can is awesome. They both seem to be able to offer what were looking for. They are both knowledge able and seem to know what they are talking about. The only difference is one is a professional the other guys are kinda just doing this for fun on the side. How do I choose?!

Re: Picking a DJ

  • I think you're fine to go with the cheaper guys.  It sounds like an idea situation to me -- they've worked at your venue, came with a recommendation, and can give you the "club" atmosphere you're looking for.

  • Many DJs that end up where your #1 DJ is started out where your #2 DJs are.  Mine was one of them and he was fantastic--the only difference was that in 2009, I could afford him and now I can't.

I think you're fine to go with #2.
  • i would also listen to samples of their work .

I think the only problem with #2 is that they may not be as serious about it as the professional guy who does this for a living. I'm not saying I wouldn't take a side job seriously, but my primary job would be my focus and my side job would kind of be like "wahetver some extra money". The more expensive guy is more expensive for a reason.

  • Having been a wedding DJ for 4 years in my 20's I can say that just because you do something part time, does not make you any less professional than somebody who does something full time.
My ex and I had a company who did music for weddings and functions and he was also a club DJ. We had couples change their wedding dates to be able to use us!
The best thing to do is to give your DJ a list of your own favourite songs and the songs you want to hear at the reception. Every wedding is different, and your wedding music should reflect your tastes as a couple as well as get your guests dancing.
The best compromise between these two things is to customize your wedding with your own tastes by choosing special songs for your first dance, cake cutting, entrance etc etc. Even your background music can reflect your tastes as a couple. Then leave it up to the DJ to put together a set that can get the people dancing.
Give them a list of your favourite dance songs as well as a list of stuff you DONT want to hear. Very important.

For some more ideas on wedding music and also on what songs get people on the floor try this link: http://www.wedding-music-help.com/wedding_reception_dance_music.html
Print out that list, go through it and pick your favs.
    Good luck!
