Kashering plates for Passover

Can anyone help me with this process? I've never done it but am doing it this year. Some plates/silverware has never been used before.

Thank you!

    One thing to add:

My orthodox rabbi said that if something was never used before (in general, not just for Passover), for glass and metal you bring them to the dish mikvah. For ceramic, you just use it. (Although my parents' orthodox rabbi said ceramic goes to the mikvah too.)

But, the mikvah doesn't make anything kosher anyway. It's a mitzvah, but your kitchen is kosher regardless. (I don't really understand the ins and outs of this, so I might just be adding to the confusion.)

I am not orthodox, so if something is new, I use it for my pesach dishes. I got all new pots and pans for the holiday. However, I just put aside some older milk dishes from my family (I'm vegetarian, so there isn't anything but dairy on them anyway) and I kept them boxed away for 2 years before I used them. I know this isn't the technical way to do it all- but it worked for me and I don't feel guilty about not bringing them to a place to Kasher them. I think it is up to you how much you can and are willing to do for the holiday.
