Heavier Women - Weight Watchers??

This is another Weight Watchers question. I am thinking about joining but I'm not sure if it would be a "waste of money" or not (kind of to follow up on that question from the other poster last night). I go to the gym and weight lift/cardio atleast 3-4x a week.

But I am about 130IBS over weight. My wedding is September 2013 so I hae time to lose the weight. Or atleast a big portion of it. Would this program be able to help with a larger amount of weight lose as opposed to the 20-30IBS i hear most people talk about?

Also, my FI is about 200IBS overweight with high blood pressure. I begged him to join weightwatchers with me (he goes to the gym with me but he over eats all the time). He refuses because he does not like the food and doesn't want to spend the money. Any tips on how to motivate him to join with me?

Any advise would be great. Thank you!

I knew someone that lost 70lbs on WW. As long as you stick to the plan for the long hall I would imagin you would be able to lose as much as you want. Just be sure to include cardio and weights too.

  • WW success has nothing to do with how much weight there is to lose and everything to do with eating well.

It didn't work for me because there wasn't enough stucture. They keep telling you that you can eat whatever you want on the diet and misappropriation of points is fairly easy bad habit to get into. BUT it totally works for some people. I needed to track my cals (i used sparkpeople) to be more accountable.
  • Thanks for the tips. I think i'm going to join sparkpeople like Anna and hope it leads me down the right path.
  • WW definitely helps you loose the weight... I lost probably 10 pounds my first month on it and 5 my second month... I think it was definitely worth the money.
The only thing was I was sooooo hungry the whole time... And when I counted my points into calories, I felt like I was eating only 1100 calories a day and for my height it's not good.

I actually think it would be better for over weight people and not just someone looking to loose 20 pounds.

  • you don't have to eat their food!! They will tell you how many points you can eat per day and you will view it as a bank account. If you want to eat a hot dog you can, you just lost x amount of points from you bank account. I don't feel deprived at all on this diet, if anything I feel like I make better choices because I don't want to spend the points (vs feeling like I CAN'T eat something). I also have found some great and easy recipes on the WW website and my FI who isn't on WW enjoys them (altho his portions are much larger than mine)!! I'm such a fan on this diet!

  • I personally use WW and I love it. I tried counting calories and doing various other diets, but for whatever reason it never worked for me. WW, somehow, does.

I think the most important quality it teaches is portion control. Yeah, I can eat whatever I want, but if I'm going to stay within my allowed points, I better not eat that entire hamburger and fries. You'll also quickly learn that bad foods can add up quickly, so you'll be more likely to turn to healthier foods so you have more points so you can eat more! (lol)

My first week I was on it, I was starving. But, now that I'm used to it, my hunger isn't an issue -- but it always kills me when they take another point away from me!

I honestly think it's worth a try. Give it a month or two and see what it does for you. The worst thing that'll happen is that it won't work and you lose like $40.

When I first tried WW, I was starving too, but realized the reason why was I was using all of my points up on things that were not filling me up and things that were taking up so many points I couldn't eat enough to stay full. When I started shifting to eating more of things that are less points, I was less hungry. The beauty is vegetables and fruit are zero points, so you can eat as many as you want whenever you want.
  • WW is the most SENSIBLE program. For me it was not a diet, but a way of life!

Even though I am not currently on WW, I would recommend it to anyone. The program, combined with an exercise program should help you with the results you desire.

Als note that you are not limited to just the one day that you go to weigh it. You can go as many times a week after that if you feel the need. Also, there are "just for guys" meetings.
  • I would totally reccoment WW to you and your FI! I joined years ago with my MIL-to be and she lost almost 100lbs in 1 year!! Plus going to the meetings and getting weighed every week really helped us stay motivated!

Your FI doesn't like food? WW teaches you how to eat real food, not pre-packaged Nutrisystem or Jenny Craig stuff. So this excuse doesn't fly. Are you sure he's not mixing his weight loss plans up?
  • I like WW because it is a lifestyle change. I used their principles. My food was prepared by another company. And now I am very happy wth my body.

My fiancé became motivated when he saw me workout regularly and get excited as my body looked more and more awesome. He got jealous! He joined CrossFit and reduced portions. There is no way to "get" your man to change. He has to decide for himself. Focus on yourself and he might follow. He might not but that's his choice.

    Good luck!
  • I totally recomment WW. I am a HUGE fan! I have lost 45 pounds since September of last year. I actually hit the 45 pound mark in the last week of March and have been struggling since. I just moved across the country and I have had a hard time getting back on track.

I officially labled last Tuesday my "new start" with WW. I have had an awesome week so let's hope that when I weigh in on Tueday, I will have made a good dent. I want to lose another 30 pounds by next May (wedding day).

PS- The WW meetings are what keep me motivated to succeed when I can't motivate myself!

  • I am on WW and it really does work. I even had a PT helping me out in the gym but WW helped me control what I am eating. I have been consistently losing 0.5 to 2 lbs a week which is what is considered healthy weight loss. I am only 2 months away to my wedding but I am condifent that I will reach my goal by then. :)
