Advice on Travel Costs for out of town attendants/family

Please help. My family, his family, and our wedding party people are all from out of town, except 2. So...what is the guideline for hotel room costs? Do we cover them for the night before since they are flying in or do they cover them, since they agreed to come. This is factor greatly in our budget. Thanks everyone!Embarassed

You don't have to cover them. Usually, the couple gets a hotel block for the guests (The hotel will reserve X number of rooms usually at a reduced price and about a month or so before the wedding the hotel* will release them if they have not all been paid for by guests). However, if you can pay for the wedding party's hotel rooms it would be very nice of you. Traditionally, the couple helps the wedding party find a house they can crash at or something. But if you can't pay or find them a place to crash, it is ok too.

  • I don't think you have to pay for their hotel rooms, although like redheadfsu said, if you can help just the bridal party that would be very generous of you :)  My MOH got married last year and she paid for the hotel room of a special family member who because of financial reasons wouldn't have been able to come otherwise.

Other than that reserving a block of rooms is really your only obligation, for mine I highly suggested people stay at a nicer hotel because it has an indoor pool and on site restaurant but I also posted a cheaper hotel on our wedding website in case people wanted a budget option.
  • You are not responsible for guest's travel expenses. Yay!

I paid for one of my bridesmaids who lived OOT to stay in a hotel because I knew she had spent a lot of money on my shower, she was the only OOT WP member, and the hotel rates were insane that weekend, but everyone else covered their own costs.

Yep, not your responsibility to pay for!

But it is courteous to your guests to track down a couple of hotels at different price points, reserve some rooms (they usually release them at a certain date, make this deadline clear to your guests) and pass on the information to your guests so they can make arrangements before they sell-out or the rates go up.
  • Ditto all PPs!
