Designer Style on a Budget

I'm new to theknot (engaged just last week!) and so while I know there are a ton of posts I could search through, it's all a bit overwhelming.

Here's my scoop. My parents died while I was in college. That means I'm paying for the wedding myself (and no, there were no wills so I don't even have their "help" in that sense).

I have designer style (love Nicole Miller for example) and I've started looking at non-"wedding dresses" to keep the cost down, and while I'm planning a casual wedding that may be appropriate. But.. for tradition's sake... I might want something more "wedding". Anyone have any good websites where I could find last year's designer weding dresses or other designers I could look into?

Re: Designer Style on a Budget

  • I would consider going to netbride.com, finding out what designers they carry, and then going to local shops to try on dresses by those designers. Then go back to netbride and get a quote for a few different dresses you love.

I've gotten quotes for a number of different dresses and netbride has consistently been a few hundred dollars under the price at the shops. This only works if they carry your designer, of course (I'm very disappointed that they don't carry Maggie Sottero!), but they're great nonetheless and have a great reputation.

  • A lot of designs stick around from season to season, so there isn't as much "last season" in bridal as in other areas.

I'd look into a used dress, on oncewed.com or preownedweddingdresses.com.  I'd also go to stores that will allow you to buy a sample.  Check out websites for local salons and see when they're having sample sales or trunk sales too.  If you have the stamina for that type of thing, I'd also consider doing one of the "Running of the Brides."  Good luck!

bridepower.com! They carry almost exclusively designer samples. I got my Kenneth Pool dress from their brick-and-mortar store (VOWS, in Newton, MA) for 80% off retail.
  • Also, set a firm budget for the dress BEFORE you start looking.  You don't want to fall for something that simply can't be found for what you can afford.

You could look into Brides Against Breast Cancer, they carry used wedding dresses and the money is for a good cause.  I'm probably donating my dress to them.

This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

Sometimes I feel like people think that brides are delicate little flower princesses who get all dressed up and pretty for one special moment of their dreams, when really they're just normal people who just happen to be getting married. Things shouldn't have to be sugar-coated for grown-ass women. -mstar284
  • You could also check out the wedding classified boards here on the knot.  I got a beautiful gown from there.

Congrats on your engagement!  Don't get too addicted to the knot :)
