I think a lot of them already know.  They just want to keep up appearances or convince themselves that they have a good life.  I'm in the "If you have to say it every day, you're faking it" camp when it comes to FB status updates.

this thread is killing me!
I have a friend who constantly puts the most mundane details of her life on fb and then ends it with 'I love my life!' Seriously. "just made dinner and hubby is home! gonna drink hot chocolate and snuggle. I have the best life!" All. the. time.

My little cousins are the worst offenders. I have to read their posts 3 times to understand it--it goes beyond text speak how bad and broken it is. My 16 yr old cousin is the most prissy, Paris Hilton wannabe teenager out there...and he's a boy. He constantly complains about his mom, dad, sister, teachers, etc. and is big on TMI.
Example from today:

sore & im always hungry "afterwards" lmao (insider)

And he always 'likes' his own posts. ick.
