I work in a restaurant and one of the servers wanted to go out on a smoke break. At the time we were ordered to keep our personal belongings in the back by the employee bathroom in the kitchen. She couldn't find her purse on the rack and started yelling about it. At the exact moment, a prep cook who was on his third day of training walked out of the bathroom with her purse in his left hand and her cigarettes in his right hand. When she started yelling at him and asking why he had it he simply said "I needed a cigarette and a couple bucks. Sorry." Needless to say he didn't make it back for his fourth day of training.
Why do I think some of my students will be like this some day? They think it is funny to get into other peoples purses/backpacks/bags and take stuff "as a joke." When I call them on it as stealing and actually write them up they go all crazy on me. I have to literally teach them that taking something that doesn't belong to you is stealing, isn't a joke, and someday somebody will either fire you or put you in jail. I should print this thread up and hand it out every time one of them tries this "joke."

We had a security guard at one of my old jobs look after the desk at night.  He used to watch porn at the desk.  He was told not to use company resources to watch porn and I guess he got a warning (I would have fired him, but they didn't).  He brought in his own DVD's and portable DVD player to watch them instead.  He was canned immediately after for not reading between the lines.  Perhaps the company should have been more specific about how porn wasn't tolerated AT ALL..

In college I worked in a high-end shoe store.  The pay was really good for retail and the employees were all high school girls from the town, plus me.  The store had a little schtick of handing out fancy lollipops to kids while their moms were shopping.  Slice Pops, if you guys remember those?  TASTY.

Anyway, the owners noticed that the bulk bags of Slice Pops kept going missing.  Turns out that one of the high school girls was stealing them and selling them in the high school cafeteria-- the same high school as all the other employee girls.  Of course they told the owners.

She was fired over Slice Pops.

Isn't the general term for this type of behavior "professional Darwinism"?

Weve a gal in the office with quite a chip on her shoulder. Despite a lack of education, shes worked up from basic reception/admin to e discovery/legal research coordinator over the past nine yrs. However, she doesnt really do much and any problems we have she is supposed to be the contact person- she doesnt really help. She makes about two grand less than me, the jr attorney. (This is important in a moment).

Another section in our office, (we're govt lawyers) posted a position for essentially what she's supposed to do in our section, making 50k. She went into Boss ladys office, and flat out demanded an 8k raise to 50k. Boss lady lost her shit, some "how DARE yous" were thrown in considering our small budget and gal was told to get out of the office.

Boss hasnt fired her- theres a moratorium on firings until after the election. But tech girl has put a biiiig target on her back and boss lady is realizing tech girl lacks the educational credentials to justify any sort of raise and her lack of productivity is not helping her cause

Aww... you mean barging into my boss's office, interrupting their work, to demand a ridiculously large raise ISN'T the right way to go?image

Working in law enforcement, I don't have to deal with stupid criminal co-workers, thankfully.  However, working in law enforcement, stupid criminals are my favorite people - they're entertaining and make our jobs so much easier!

    Love this thread!

okay - for my story I need to you to separate your feelings about the issue itself and concentrate on this guy's behavior. One of the jobs I had in my military career was as the discharge/transfer manager. During that time, "Don't ask, don't tell" was the policy if you were gay. If you told or if you lived the lifestyle openly you were discharged. Looking back it is amazing to me how many people I now know are gay hid that professionally. Anyhoo, I digress. We had a young kid who would spend part of his time on FB boasting about being a Soldier and the other part of his time discussing his gay lifestyle. He was FB friends with a LOT of military people and it got back to his chain of command. That investigation took no time at all since his FB page was wide open to the whole world. I had 3 discharge packets cross my desk for this in my 2 1/2 years in that position. This was the only one that wasn't returned for being a weak investigation.

I used to work in foster care. We did evening and weekend training sessions for foster parents (and staff) that lasted a few hours. We would provide dinner or lunch to make things easier on the trainees.  Turns out the staff member who was often in charge of ordering the food was ordering the max budgeted for but holding half of it back to take home with her.  She got busted one night when they ran out of food and she admitted there was more in her trunk.  Up to that point the policy had been staff could take leftover food home with them.  Since she took huge advantage of that, the policy changed and all leftovers had to be returned to the office.
