Flower DIY

Hi all, I am interested in DIY-ing my flowers... we are getting married in northern WI so far from the cities and I think it would be fun to do it myself. Wondering from other DIYers if you did it a day or two ahead, what you did to keep them looking beautiful, etc.? Also, did you order wholesale from anywhere online that you would recommend? I want daisies, red roses, baby's breath, sunflowers, and something peachy...

Re: Flower DIY

  • It can be done, and at a huge gigantic enormous savings. Have you worked with fresh flowers on a large scale before? I've never ordered from an online source before. But if you go to FiftyFlowers.com, they have a fairly good, straightforward tutorial on flower care and prep. At a glance, the only flower that you have there that needs special handling would be the sunflowers. While they're rehydrating (after driving around in the car or delivery) you need to keep a light source directly above them, or they can twist off in wonky directions trying to find light. If you're buying from a wholesaler, yes, get them ready a day or two early, because they usually aren't fully opened. Give them at least twelve hours to rehydrate before you arrange them, keep them as cool as possible. A cool basement is fine. Or the back porch, depending on the time of year, and make sure they stay wet. They drink a lot the first day or two. Avoid temperamental flowers. Fifty flowers has loads of good info on line; even if you don't use that particular company, read through it, and decide if this is a fun diy or something that might make you crazy. The flowers below aren't my particular choice of color or style- too super orangey autumn for me- my mom was having an autumn lunch thing- but I included them as an example of how much money you can save. All of that is 15$ in dahlias, 2$ in filler flowers.
  • Whoops, 20$ in fillers, not 2, and apologies for the giant block of text. My paragraphs vanished.
  • I'm debating doing my own as well!!!   It's one of those things that seems so simple...but that is also what worries me, lol.  I don't want it to turn out like one of those failed pintrest things!!  I'm also only making 2--mine and for my sister.  I'm not looking for complicated or fussy.  At this point i'm 90% sold on DIY and ordering the flowers I want from a shop here in town.  If I ask nice, they might even trim them down and what not for me :)
