Spray tan for wedding day?

Fake tan has always looked orange on me as I'm very pale. I haven't actually tried it since college though, my friend says its much better than it used to be.

So how many brides are getting a spray tan and what brands are the best?

Re: Spray tan for wedding day?

  • Why would you want to be a different color on your wedding day than you normally are? I am pale and freckled and did nothing to change that. And white ended up looking surprisingly amazing on me.

  • I hate fake tanner.  It is made for white people who want to darken their skin tone.  Well, what if there was a bleaching product for people with dark skin tones?  It would be perceived as ridiculous and, IMO, racist that they should be any other skin tone than what they are.
Anyways, I think pale brides look beautiful, just like any other bride does on her wedding day.  Here are some pale brides:

However, yes, fake tan has developed a little bit since you probably tried it.  If you were going to go that route, do a trial run way ahead of time in case you do turn orange or just don't like it.

  • Look at online reviews and TRY a couple places before the wedding.  I might do something like workout a day or two post-spray (equivalent to time b/w tan and wedding)...just to see how it holds up and how it looks when you are a bit flushed like you'd be w/ wedding stress and/or dancing

  • Different types of spray tans can look very different. I know that sounds obvious. If you really want to do it, try a few different places well before the wedding. I work out a lot, so spray tans only last a few days for me. While I do like spray tans (the sugar based ones look the best on me), I don't plan to do it for our June wedding. I just really don't want to have the tanner run on my white dress!
  • I'm getting a spray tan three days before the wedding... My fiance has some Native American in him and gets really tan just being outside for 30 minutes, while I am mostly Irish and very pale and get sunburned when I think about the sun :) ... When we take pictures, the difference is really noticeable, so I decided to get a spray tan so I would have a little bit of color that day.

I would recomend trying out what you plan doing well in advance, that way you'll know for sure if that's exactly what you want

  • I thought fake tanning was only something we did 12 years ago for prom...

Get a good makeup artist and wear a little bronzer on your face and chest/shoulders. A good makeup artist will be able to take your "flaws" (if you're concerned you'll look washed out in photos, etc) and accent your features in a natural looking way.
  • I am going to basically go do a trial spray tan and see how it looks before the wedding so I can decide if I want to do it. The only reason I'm considering it is because I always end up with a "farmer's tan" and I'm hoping it will even out my color so I'm not completely pale on my chest with tan arms.

  • I spray tanned because I do it all of the time. Its how my Husband is used to seeing me. I will tell you that some of it did rub off on my dress under my arms from dancing all night. Not a lot, but it is something that can happen. As PPs said, try it out long enough before the wedding that you know how you'll look.
  • I'd veto the spray tan. That stuff is a mess and it never seems to look quite right.

Do you already have your dress? My cousin, who is very pale, wore a champagne dress and it looked phenomenal with her skin tone. Even if you do have a diamond white dress, you'll look great in it regardless of how tan you are.

  • I would go with an airbrush tan that a live person applies to you rather than one of the booths like Mystic or VersaTan. I can never get an even tan in those booths. Even with the robot lady telling me which way to turn, I could never get it right.

I had an airbrush tan last week for a wedding I was in this past Saturday. It looked great, very natural, not orange at all.

  • I personally think spray/fake tans look bad. I'm very pale and I'm totally OK with it. I'm going to rock it on my wedding day and look awesome.
  • I am pale and while I dislike the fake or orange look, I do think there is value in having a spray tan for your wedding...ESPECIALLY if it makes you feel more confident. I got a test airbrush tan done and they just used two coats of the really light color. It evened out my skin tone a bit and will also keep me from looking bright red (I turn red with any sort of emotion -- this will look much better, especially in photos!). In terms of the photos posted above, I actually bet at least 1 or 2 of them is from a spray tan. I am not getting an airbrush tan to look TAN... I am using it to look less CLEAR. Seriously, this time of year I feel so pale that I feel see through. So go do a test and see what you think...just don't overdo it and don't let anyone judge you or try to make you feel bad about it.
  • I did a spray tan for my wedding and I wasn't orange. The reason I opted for a spray tan is that I wore a strapless dress for my wedding in November, I wasn't careful over the summer being outside when I did yardwork or just haning out and I had a major farmer's tan going which hadn't faded enough by my wedding not to be extremely obvious. Had my summer tan faded, I wouldn't have gotten spray tanned.

I went about about a month and a half to a place and got a spray tan to see what it would look like & to see if I would have any allergic reaction to it. It worked out well. So I schedule another tan for 3 days prior to my wedding and was very happy with results. I will admit that some of the tan did rub off on the inside of my dress, but it wasn't visable until I took my dress off. It only came off because of sweating while dancing. I did opt for the spray tan where you stand in a booth mostly naked and someone sprays me.

For a successful spray tan start moisturizing your body well before you get the spray tan and exfoliate regularly too. It will help make sure your skin is in best possible condition to take the spray. Also wear loose clothes to the appointment, unless you wear a strapless bra, you'll want to ditch your bra after you get sprayed so it doesn't leave lines from absorbing the chemicals before you are fully set.

  • I also did a spray tan.. not to necessarily look "tan" but to give a little color to my pale skin so that I wasn't washed out in photos. (I also exercise outdoors a lot- I'm a runner- so I had a lovely sports bra racer-back outline that I wanted to even up a little bit.) Def try it out ahead of time. I recommend getting a tech to air-brush you. Once it's on, you can't get it wet, so plan on 8 hrs of down time. For me, the color was immidiate, but also darkened over time. I was a little worried (because it got way too dark for my taste.. and looked a little blotchy) but after the 8 hrs and I showered, the excess came off, and my skin was pretty even and natural looking. People couldn't really tell I had a tan because the color change was subtle and natural. (I could tell by my tan lines though- so there was a pretty good change.)

I put a lot of thought into it beforehand- I didn't want to be "tan bride" I wouldn't recognize in pictures, I wanted a healthy glow/contrast from my dress. I think it was just enough color for me to look natural and not washed out. I did one two days before my wedding, and it turned out great. So try it out, you don't have to do it for the wedding if you don't like the results.

  • I did a spray tan, but only because I am super pale, so wanted a little color.  I tried a place out a month before the wedding and liked the natural color it gave me.  It did not streak and I have never turned orange from a spray tan.  ask the salon what color they would select for your skin tone.  Since I'm pale I would never ever do the strongest color since I know that would not look right.  My "tan" was not even noticeable and gave me just enough color to still look natural for me.  For the wedding I did it Wednesday afternoon, for a Friday evening wedding.  That way it hit its dark stage Wednesday night, but I had Thursday for a shower and a took a bath on the morning of my wedding day.
