Is this a "thing" now?

So, lately I have noticed on Instagram and FB the tendency of people (mostly one person, actually), who WRITE like T H I S and [emphasize] WORDS by either s p a c i n g  t h e m  o u t or [enclosing] them in [brackets] or RANDOMLY writing in ALL CAPS.

It makes reading her captions frustrating and annoying, and it makes her appear (to me at least) to be uneducated. I get capitalizing for emphasis, especially on a platform (like TK mobile) that doesn't allow for bolding or italicizing, I even get using parenthesis for parenthetical thoughts. I do not get the randomness.

Is this A Thing? Am I old for not realising this A Thing?

Re: Is this a "thing" now?

  • It's A T H I N G!  Oh my goodness that was exhausting to write.

I get the all-caps when you're on mobile and can't bold/italicize (I'm definitely guilty of this), but otherwise I don't get it.

The spacing thing is even more bizarre.  It's super annoying to write like that!
Don't worry guys, I have the Wedding Police AND the Whambulance on speed dial!
  • It's better then the leet thing "l33t" where people typed with numbers?!? I don't know about all that noise! I'm guilty of a lot of shorthand ie: lol, IMO, idk but T O T Y P E L I K E T H I S just seems silly!
  • I have not seen T H A T so much as t.h.i.s. lately.  My guess is that it is supposed to emphasize a p.o.i.n.t, but I find it incredibly annoying.  I am not a fan of writing trends or l.a.m.e. ways to draw yet more self attention #I'mcool#belikeme#stopthismadness.
  • The spacing thing hurts my eyes. Like physically hurts them. I can't wait for that trend to go away.
  • Or the grammar :( it wasn't as bad before my recent COMM class in college but now I just hate it.

An I wuz lyke u dnt knw wut I ben threw u knw?!?!

    Wtf is that?!?!?

I have a huge problem when I See Every Facebook Status Written Like This Where Every Word Has A Capital Letter At The Beginning.
I have a friend like that. It's scary cause almost everything she posts on fb nowadays is about how she's "reliving her childhood" by helping her 6 y/o with his spelling homework every night. Recently she posted a note from his teacher asking if she could do extra homework so her son can practice NOT capitalizing the first letter in every word! She was so mad, but no one had the guts to point out that she's the one who probably inadvertently taught him that...

That is kinda funny!!! The person who does that has a young one around that age and I hope he doesn't pick up on that habit of hers.

  • Oh my goodness. I was going to say this isn't a thing, but apparently from other posters it is. Luckily none of my friends do this. Yuck! Talk about a headache trying to read it.

  • I'm with melbelleup.  I am so thankful that I have not run across this...yet.

I wish people would realize that writing like you have an IQ of 2 is not cute nor cool nor unique it just makes you look like a fucking idiot.

You guys are lucky. Unfortunately I see the hashtags, the big and small letters mixed in, the spacing between upper case words....yeah I have seen it all in texts, email/private messages & on facebook. It is annoying as all hell!

  • I feel like all of these typing styles were popular when I was in middle school.

Maybe that's as far as these people got with their educations.
I laughed so hard reading your comment. xD thank you!

Not sure if it's just my family and friends, but do others have it where their friends/family are spam posting with pics that have quotes or sayings on them? Whether it's life lesson tips, religious, etc. I get on and I'll have 25 notices and see that 24 of them are all because someone posted that many pics!

  • I think it's "a thing" now, unfortunately.

    A very, very annoying thing.

I hate all of this. Bastardizing the English language. What really kills me is that most of the time it takes longer to write the incorrect annoying form than the correct one. Capitalising first letters, random uppercase during words etc. I understand using a text shorthand in certain circumstances. Sending a text message and you don't want to run over to two and it's to someone close who won't mind if you change "you" to "u". I have found that in the work place I am beginning to receive e-mails from highly educated professionals where they can no longer type "you" anymore. It's appalling!

Grammar mistakes when typing quickly and not concentrating much happen and can be forgiven, this trend...It makes me worry about the future of our planet. I'm possibly being a bit dramatic, but I have had this internal anger building up against this for a while and it's nice (nyc2c...yuck) to see others feel the same way.

EDIT: typical. I rant about English and I make my own grammar mistakes.

First bolded....I agree with you completely. How can anyone take you seriously if you're not being professional?

Second bolded - I have never seen that before. I would read that as "NYC to see"....>.> I know there's a LOT more short hand now a days, I remember when it was just u and 4ever, etc. Not almost every other word *sighs* To me, there's a time and a place for short hand.
