Hankerchief Dance

I'm trying to find out the origin of a traditional dance.    When I was a little girl I went to a wedding reception where everyone formed a big circle on the dance floor. Then one person started off the dance by placing a hankerchief on the ground in front of a person they wished to dance with. They would then kneel on the hankerchief and take the hand of their chosen partner, leading them to the center of the circle for a dance. After a brief dance, the first person returns to the ring of the circle.  The invitee then becomes the inviter, taking the kerchief and inviting a new partner to dance in the same manner, and so on and so on.  I thought this was the funnest, most touching dance i've ever experienced at a wedding and would like to incorporate into my own wedding. I've been trying to find the origin of this tradition but my searches online only come up with the Jewish hankerchief dance, which I know it's not. I'm thinking it may be Eastern European in origin?  My parents have no memory of whose wedding this was, so theres no one else to ask.  Does anyone know about this type of traditional dance or it's origins? Thanks!!!!!

There is a romanian dance sometimes performed at weddings that is like this... it's called perinita.

My H is Romanian, which is why I know that...but we didnt do it at our wedding.  We did a Romanian Hora instead, which is apparently more traditional.
