IMHO, I understand emergency contraception for 15 y/os  and for ppl who have been raped/are in an unhealthy relationship.  If you get pregnant now and are planning a wedding/recently married, it is your responsibility.

Just an FYI - The morning after pill is not the same as the abortion pill.  It would not terminate a pregnancy, it would only prevent it as long as the egg wasn't already fertilized.

While I have never used it, I see nothing wrong with it, nor do I see how it could cause any sort of ethical dilemma considering that it won't end a viable pregnancy.

I've used it in the past. No issues. I take BC reguarly now, so EC wouldn't help me.

Not all married people want a family. There are several of us here on the board that are CF (childfree by choice). Some people also have genetic issues that they may not want to pass on to a child and do not want to conceive for that reason. So I don't have a problem with anyone taking Plan B.

It doesn't end a pregnancy. If you are already pregnant, as Stace said, it will do nothing. That's why it is best taken as soon as possible after unprotected sex. It isn't an abortion, although those opposed to traditional BCP's will likely have ethical issues with this form of contraceptives as well.

True .And you definitely should not be relying on EC, taking it as regular birth control.
Plus, anyone I know who has ever taken it has said that it really messes with you and it isn't something you'd want to take all the time.

But the way I see it, EC is called contraception for a reason and it IS a form of BC and being responsible. It is certainly more responsible to take it if you think something may have happened than to do nothing and be unprepared.

But obviously, no one would want to take no BC and then just rely on EC. That would be crazy and wouldn't even work that well.

I can't imagine using it as your primary BC. It makes you feel like crap, and can you imagine going to your doctor to ask for it everytime you had sex... wow.

Although, I must confess, when I used it I was irresponsible, but people make mistakes and regardless, getting  EC was much,much smarter than just winging it and possibly becoming pregnant. To me, that is more irresponsible. If you failed to be responsible at the time you did it, at least you have one more chance to be responsible.

You don't have to go to your dr. to get the morning after pill anymore. It's a non-prescription for anyone over 18. I'm pretty sure you just have to go to the pharmacy and ask.

It would get super expensive to keep taking it every time!

I'm thinking a true emergency would be a condom breaking or having sex, throwing up your BCP, falling asleep early and forgetting to take it.

I'm sure people who try to take it as regulkar BCP (non-emergency) will likely end up pregnant since it isn't as effective as regular BCP. And it would be a total waste of money to keep going and getting EC!

I'm a pharmacist and I have no problem with people using it when it is needed. What infuriates me is when people bring in a prescription for it (so that their insurance pays for it and they dont have to), and the prescription has 11 refills. Thats crap.

Oh my. That surprises me that a doctor would write 11 refills AND it also surprises me that insurances would approve that.
I get that accidents happen and even though I want kids, definitely agree that marriage doesn't always mean kids. I think EC has it's time and place and I am glad that there is that option for those situations people may get in. Hopefully if someone needs to take it once, it can be a lesson learned? Or maybe not if you have 11 refills!

IMO its the woman"s choice to take it.

BC is not 100% effective.  EC is an accelerated BC option.  So if you are OK with BC, then EC shouldn't be different.

As long as the woman isn't harming her body, she should be able to take EC as often as needed w/o being judged. 

I have never had to take myself, but would if warranted - and its nice to know I have options as needed.
