I finally decided on a camera, I told DH I want the Nikon D5000.  I keep emailing him about sales, but I'm trying to avoid looking around the house to see if he bought it yet!  I've also been reading dslr cameras for dummies.  Thank you so much for all your help!

Oh, the D5000 is a great, great camera. :) I am very jealous! Seriously, that is a high-end entry level camera. Good choice!

I was going to recommend another book too, Understanding Exposure. That book is more advanced than DSLR for Dummies, but I think it helps get more out of your camera. I borrowed it from the library, but ended up buying my own copy because I refer to it a lot.

There is a photography board on the Bump now, but it is not just for ladies with kids (mom-togs as I call them). :) I've been hanging out there a lot, planning my next camera purchase.

Nikons are great in low light...your shots will look amazing.

Make sure to tell your DH to get the camera and a lens ( the kit lens 18-55mm) or a separate lens if he buys body-only (I like a 50mm fixed, very inexpensive and a great general lens). Some people say a kit lens isn't good, but I like to have a lens to use on the camera body immediately! :) That way, you can start taking shots on Christmas Day!

I can't wait to see your camera and your shots.
