Second guessing the bridesmaid dresses...

I went shopping with my bridesmaids this weekend and this is what we came up with:

This is my dress:

Not exactly my vision, but it's a good price and all four bridesmaids who tried it on looked good in it and were happy (or pretending to be). It was the best dress by far during the appointment. Unfortunately, bridesmaid #5 didn't like it and pointed out it "mimicked" my dress.

I was originally pretty excited about the dress and intended to tell the unhappy 'maid to deal with it, but now I'm second guessing it.

Any thoughts?

Re: Second guessing the bridesmaid dresses...

  • They don't look that similar to me. Definitely not matchy matchy. I think you're fine.
  • I can see what she is getting at (one-shoulder, similar silhouette) but I don't think it's a problem. No one is going to mistake the bridesmaids' dress for a bridal dress and it won't look like they are in a non-white version of your dress.

  • They are somewhat similar, IMO.

  • I see what she's saying about it mimicking your dress, but I guess you have to ask yourself if it really matters. If you want to further differentiate, consider accessorizing your look with a veil, hair piece or blusher, make your bouquet different from theirs, etc.

  • They have some similar elements but they certainly aren't that much alike.  I actually like the idea of carrying some elements from the bridal gown into the bridesmaids dresses, as long as it isn't too similar.  I think it helps create a more consistent flow to the overall bridal party look. My dress has a lot of ruching in bodice and we actually have talked about wanting to pick BM dresses that have that also to get a more cohesive look. And it's not like anyone will confuse you with the bridesmaids anyway.  I mean, come on, do the guys worry that they groomsmens tuxes look too much like the groom?  If you and your BM's like the dress, go for it.

  • I think they compliment each other nicely.  =)
  • Thanks for all the input!! I've been trying to catch up on all the reading I should have already done.

Tomorrow I'm going out for one more round of shopping, but I think I've made up my mind for the purple. I do seem stuck on it and I've already begun to picture how it's going to work in with the scheme of things.
  • I don't think they match, the styles compliment each other very nicely. And the purple is beautiful.
