Re: Advent Poll- Especially for non Christians

  • Not Christian, but I know what Advent is because my parents are Christian. I also go to the German language Advent service in Nashville every year with my dad, so that's given me further information about Advent that I didn't know from going to church with my parents during Advent season when I was younger.

We do have an Advent calendar every year. It's Lego.

  • Crap, this was the first sunday--and we skipped.  and we'll skip next week too.  Whoops.
  • I'm agnostic, but culturally Christian, and we celebrate Advent along with all the rest of our Christmas traditions. We live in an area with a large Moravian community and attending Advent services last year, which was lovely. Even though I don't believe Christ is our Lord and Savior, I enjoyed the spirit of peacefulness and expectant waiting.
  • I know what it is, b/c I was religious as a younger person.

I actually have a beautiful Advent cabinet thing for the calendar b/c I fell for it so hard (though I'm not sure how the calendar really fits into the religious meaning, does it at all?  I knew about candles for the Sundays) that we just put some candies and little dollar store doo-dads in for fun.
  • I have the overall gist of it.

Alrhough I found an ossum reuseable one I got at Target. Just load it up with candies. I told DH if he wants bible verses in there, he's gotta churn 'me out.

Although maybe when DD gets to more of a reading/complex thought stage, we might try some other inspiration verses along with the goody Secularized, other religions, something to share, etc. that would take more thought than I have right now.

  • Ok.  I said something to SIL about Advent and she said "You mean like Seventh Day Adventists?"   I wasn't sure if my sheltered world was showing or if she's that dumb.  I mean I don't know everything about Hanukah, but I get the gist.
  • Raised Catholic (Catholic school for 6 years) I know exactly what it is.

  • yeah, SIL is just kinda clueless, because ahs she never seen advent calendars at stores?

when this is on the shelf at target, it falls into 'common knowledge': http://www.amazon.com/Madelaine-Chocolate-Company-MC154-Calendar/dp/B000X5WL04
  • Agreed. Even if you're not culturally Christian, there's enough common exposure to the season that you get the general gist of it.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • I grew up with interfaith parents who were non-religious. So I had no formal religious education or traditions...
I definitely thought it had to do with candy...does it?

Not completely off base--it's a countdown to Christmas (and, from a religious standpoint, the 4 Sundays leading up to Christmas, specifically).  But there are often candy-themed calendars where you open a door each day to get hidden treats
