Flying with the wedding dress

Hello everyone, I am getting married July 19th, 2014 at the RIU Palace in Aruba. I am flying with United Airlines. I was just wondering if anyone has had any experience with flying with their wedding dress or if someone on here knows somebody that has. I contacted the airline and they stated that they would try to accommodate as much as possible for me to carry on the dress but if the closets or overhead departments are full, they can't guarantee anything. I don't know if it's safer to ship the dress ahead of time to the hotel or simply try my luck that day. Any advice?

Re: Flying with the wedding dress

  • I haven't done it yet either, but I can't imagine shipping the dress. That anxiety would kill me. I would much rather have it under my own control, but that might just be me.

On a side note, passengers tend to be kind to brides. If you explain to the man trying to jam his luggage into the overhead that your wedding dress is in there, and could he be careful, I'm sure he will jam it into the next one instead.
  • I think I'm going to attach the garment bag to me to help with the anxiety I have about this lol
  • I traveled from WI to CA with my dress as my carry on. Luckily my dress was fairly light and wasn't a material that would wrinkle very much. I ended up putting it in the garment bag, rolling that all up (kind of like a jelly roll) and put that in the overhead. Pretty much everyone knew what it was - I can't say that any of the flight attendants were very nice about it - on the first flight when we asked if there was a closet to hang it in the comment was "We could hang it off the wing for you!".

Other passengers / random folks in the airport kind of stared and/or smiled at us. Rental car people were super nice and all of our hotels of course were also super nice and left notes/treats in all our rooms.

I was pretty nervous the whole flight but it turned out just fine :)

I'm sorry. I know we try to keep it mostly PG on this board, but to that, I would respond:

ETA: I can't figure out how to post a .gif, but believe me it was MEAN.

  • My watered down comment would be "who pissed in her cheerios???" I mean seriously WTF!!!
