Changing last names

So my FI is changing his last name to mine for various reasons. Well he got on the states website to check out the process for having this done. It is insane! If I were changing my last name I would just have to go to the courthouse and sign a few papers. The process for him changing his last name could take months apparently. He has to fill out pretty much the same papers but there are a few added to that and apparently it takes longer to process it (according to the website). Grrrr... Oh right mini rant over.

Re: Changing last names

  • Yeah, I find that really sexist. I live in a state that allows gay marriage, so in that, whether you are male or female, you can change your name when you get married in the same way.  My FI and I are both keeping our own names when we get married.

  • Yeah, I've read how hard and sexist the process of the man changing his name is. It's ridiculous. I hope it becomes more common so it can be easier!

  • I hope it becomes easier some day too. We were just really surprised at how difficult it was going to be. I mean it is just ridiculous.
  • Oh no!  This is so sexist and terrible.  I have all kinds of complicated feelings about name-changing to begin with, though.

"I'm not a rude bitch.  I'm ten rude bitches in a large coat."

  • I guess I shouldn't be too surprised... I do live in Kentucky
  • Wow, that is terrible. I wouldn't have even thought about that being a different process.
  • That sucks. Bleh institutional sexism.

Yay for the South (commiserates the Tennessean) :/.

  • Yes, I've heard it can be a nightmare. Both of us are changing our last names to a hyphenated name, so I'm mentally preparing now. lol

The south does take a bit to catch up doesn't it?
  • Ohio is just as bad!
  • Canada isn't much better... Things are stupid here in Ontario. I can legally assume his surname or assume it by hyphenating our surnames without any fees (within 90 days) or having to reissue my birth certificate with the new name. However, if I want both last names sans hyphen, or if I want to add my maiden name as a middle name (so that I can use his as my surname but still keep mine somehow), I need to do a legal name change, complete with fees and reissuing the birth certificate (and it takes a lot more time).
