Part of my job is "independent" marketing for one of our national cinema chains. It can be pretty groovy (I occasionally get invited to premieres, or get movie merch etc), but sometimes it really, really sucks. Today was one of the days when it sucked.
There are a couple of things that happen semi-regularly that really make me want to scream.
1) The cinema changes the release date, and doesn't let us know
2) They change the release name, and don't let us know (e.g. Redemption was originally Hummingbird, Imogene was originally Girl Most Likely)
3) They don't send us or give us access to graphics, synopses, production notes etc but expect us to be able to promo the films, run competitions, write blurbs etc
Today it just happened to be Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas (blegh) for which they have done all of the 3 over the last 2 months (number 2 being done in the last couple of days, AFTER I'd already done all the promotional graphics).
They just don't seem to understand that it takes time, effort, and expertise to make their promotional graphics, run their competitions, and create their content. I don't just sit at the computer and press a button. And the freak the eff out if they feel we're not making a big enough deal about their movies, which is kinda difficult to do when we've got almost nothing to go on...
On top of which, one of our email servers decided to have a fit this morning and somehow locked my sister out of her account, one of our other clients decided that he'd asked us for a report which he hadn't asked us for and threw a hissy about the additional cost that pulling the report would run him, and our website decided it didn't want to accept any of my graphics until a few minutes ago - for absolutely no reason.
And our sister-business (which is covering part of our running costs because we're still a fledgling company) is really suffering at the moment because no one wants to talk about funeral cover, so we have no idea what we're going to do if business doesn't pick up for them soon.
I just want to crawl into bed and not come out until after the stupid movie releases. I love my job, really I do. Today was just a crap day.
