'What size is your ring?'

Re: 'What size is your ring?'

  • I would've instantly thought band size as well, because I've gotten that question before. Not once has anyone asked me how big my diamond is though, thankfully. FI has given me a rough estimate (didn't ask, he offered up the info) but I wouldn't be sharing that with anyone. Love the response that you gave back to her!

I can endorse that theory, @KeptInStitches! It seems like it would work.

I was just taken aback -- lots of people have asked me what size my ring is in the sense of 6, 6.5, etc. Because I am tall, with long fingers, my fingers/hands *look* smaller than they are. So I'm fine with answering that. It's like my shoe size. Whatever.

I just couldn't believe she asked the carat weight.
I dunno, I wouldn't be offended by that kind of question.  Some people are just curious. . . I personally have no concept of carat weight and I actually have no idea about the carat weight of my center stone, nor the total carat weight of the band.  I love my ring and that's all that sticks in my brain, lol.

However, you know this woman enough to know that she wasn't being curious in a good natured sort of way.  What was her reaction to your answer?!

ETA: A lot of times I have found that people who seem overly curious about large carat diamonds just equate really big with really expensive, when the truth is that clarity, cut, and color have a very big impact on how much a stone is worth.  You can have a huge 4 carat stone that is of crappy quality and is actually worth less than a 1 carat stone.

  • What a hooker! Maybe she should go back to cruising the playground for dates!

I assumed we were talking band size too (5 here). I've had friends ask me this because they're curious what size their fingers are.

As far as carat weight question- NO ONE has asked me that. If someone does, I really don't know what I'd say. I'd like to think I'd be able to come up with something like it doesn't matter what size it is, it's from the guy I love, he picked it for me, and I didn't have to henpick him to get engaged. I'd probably end up stuttering and stammering instead

I definitely assumed band size, too, and wondered if this thread was venturing into the land of body size and people insinuating you're too fat/too skinny. Asking CW is definitely a faux pas, and I cringe when people ask what mine is. Why does it matter? I know the exact TCW of my ring (because I picked it out after he proposed), but that doesn't mean I have to share it with anyone. I just feign ignorance and say, "Not really sure. All I know is that it's pretty and sparkles and I got a little bit of pink in there, so I'm happy!" It also bothers me when other women proclaim their stone size, trying to make people jealous. I knew a girl who posted a close up of her ring on Facebook with the caption, "1.37 cats, wuhoo!" Um, tacky. If you want to show me your ring, awesome... but leave the size smugness out of it.

  • That's a great response I would have never thought of that! Lol
