US photographer to shoot in Canada - Work Permit ?

hi there!
looking for some help regarding a rather specific photography issue for our wedding.
we have found an amazingly talented american photographer whom we would like to shoot our wedding in canada. after getting in contact, he unfortunately informed us that he'd need a temporary work permit to shoot our wedding. just looking for some further details - i was under the assumption they would be entering the country as a business visitor, which does not require a work permit.
anyone faced this issue before or have some words of advice?
as much as i'd like to move along to another photographer, i sort of have my heart set.
thanks in advance!

  • He probably knows his business best, so if he says he needs a work permit, he probably does. Canada's getting stricter on those type of things. My dad fixes machines in canneries and used to do ones in Canada but because they are getting stricter he only does US ones now. I believe the restrictions are so that the jobs are left for Canadians, which is a smart thing to do.
  • You should call and inquire with Canada's Labor Dept or equivalent.  If you don't know where to start, try contacting a local politician.  They should have a person on their staff to assist constituents with problems or questions like these.  Just explain that you would like to use a US Photographer for your wedding and you do not know what type of permits are needed or how to go about getting them.  They should point you in the right direction.
  • If you are in the US, call the Canadian Embassy or visit their website.
  • From what I know, he'll need a work permit.  We watch a lot of Border Security, and one guy was almost denied cos he was going to do reno work on his GF's parents house for free.  It was still considered work cos a Canadian contractor could have done the work for payment, and this guy would be taking that job away from him, even though he wasn't getting paid.

Contact the consulate to see what the procedure is for him to get one.  If you decide to do it, I'd assume you'd have to pay for any permit fees required.
