Pet Peeves: People who walk too slow, especially in a huge gaggle you cannot seem to get around; poorly formatted and laid out documents; students who don’t put their names on papers; adults who say “oh I’m not a math person,” especially educated adults. You would never catch a professional saying “oh, I’m illiterate”!!! You don’t have to be fluent in calculus to be functional at math!

Snark Level (1 [low snark] - 10 [high snark]): I operate between from 6 – 8 depending on the day

I’ve Been On TK Since: Lurking a few months. I love this board and the etiquette board!

How You Came to Be On TK: Saw the etiquette board reference (positively!) on another advice forum

How I like my potatoes: ANY way, as long as they’re in my mouth

Favorite book/author: Gone With the Wind, but I read a LOT. Recently: All of Gillian Flynn’s books, Night Film…

Tell Us Something Interesting About Yourself:  I have 7 younger siblings spread across the country from Seattle, to Atlanta, Houston to Orlando. My sister who lives in Orlando works for Disney World. We get to use her killer discount. BF and I are taking our 4th trip there together this holiday. He loves it there (I took him for his first visit and he’s been obsessed ever since.) I fancy myself a bit of a Disney World planning expert, so if anyone’s planning a trip, I’m happy to answer questions!

  • Welcome!

How come your cat doesn't have a name?
Which Gillian Flynn book is your favorite?
    What's your favorite alcoholic beverage?

  • Welcome! Your dog looks kind of scary/angry in that picture of her in all the pillows. But I like her scruffy appearance...she looks like she has a fun personality!

Why does your BF take so long to get ready? Somehow even though I start getting ready before mine and don't waste time in the mornings BF still always manages to be ready before I am. And I don't wear makeup and it usually takes less thna 5 minutes to blow dry my hair.

Why do you feel there is racism/classism/sexism against your students? I know you said you teach at an all-boys school. Is it a school that specifically caters to underprivileged students? What's the focus?

What's your favorite thing that your BF cooks for you?
She is very scruffy.... She only looks fluffy after a bath lol.

I love his CHICKEN FRIED STEAK! It is so flavorful and the gravy he makes is the bomb.... He also makes some delicious enchiladas.

Our cat does not have name because nothing fits! She was a stray who wandered into BF's parents' garage one day this fall and she was so sweet we decided to take her in. She is very affectionate and playful. We tried Yoko (after Yoko Ono) and Strawberry Fields (Berry for short) and neither stuck. So now she's just The Cat or The Kitty.

I really enjoyed Dark Places the best. It was so twisted, and I loved the idea of the child victim of a horrendous crime growing up in the lime light and how it affected her. I highly recommend it!

I have so many favorite beverages! My stand-by is Amaretto Sours. YUM!
  • @Sioux1986 - Do you have a pic of her? I'm good at naming animals, or renaming them, I guess I should say. When I went to @csousa1's house for the first time, I randomly started calling her cat 'Chase'. His name is Smokey. He is TOTALLY not a Smokey.

I read 'Gone Girl' and I liked it I guess, but I was really disappointed with the ending and I definitely wasn't obsessed with it like the rest of the world seemed to be.

  • Your dog looks like he is about to go Ape Shit on something in the bottom picture with all the pillows lol. But he is cute!

    Welcome!

    What's your favorite drink?

I will have to dig up a pic of her! I agree with the ending. I thought it was kind of fitting but I thought the magic really lay in the first half of the book. I would really suggest her other two books. They are very well done.

Hahahah that's actually her smiling face!!!!!!!

Alcoholic I love Amaretto Sours and Long Islands. Non-alcoholic I am a huge fan of Wawa Hot Chocolate!
  • Welcome! What's your favorite thing to knit? What's your favorite winter activity?
  • Welcome to the nut house!

I hate to say it, but your pet peeve about the "I'm not a math person" kind of annoyed me. I will say that I am not a math person. It just makes no sense to me. I'm not talking about 2+2 or even up to algebra and trig, but math is not a talent of mine and I have no interest in doing it past what I have to do for finances and such. To me, saying that I am not a math person is like saying "I don't like to read" not that I'm illiterate. That's how I see it and how I use it anyway.

What part of the country are you in? You don't have to answer if you don't want too, I'm just curious.
What is your favorite sport to either play or watch?
    Favorite animal?

My favorite thing to knit is hats! I can lose interest pretty quick in a project but hats are the right amount of time and interest to me. My favorite winter activity would have to be.....hahah Christmas shopping and baking! I love getting ready for the holidays!

I kinda see where you're coming from, but not like to read literature is like akin to someone saying "I don't like algebra/calculus/trig" or something like that. I come from a place where math to me is a beautiful and logical way to describe the world. It burns me up that math education focuses on JUST the abstract and the idea that math is this thing you are supposed to do in a vacuum. I believe that is the root of so many "not math people" in our generation....math is just problems in a textbook, when in reality that's not what it is...... I read something somewhere that the way we teach math in America would be like teaching music students to read endless pages of sheet music without them ever picking up an instrument or singing a note. And that type of societal attitude is what makes so many people hate or not be able to grasp math.

Wooo, I didn't mean to write such a diatribe. I just think its a real issue!

I live in Wilmington, DE. I'm actually from Atlanta originally, but my career brought me up here. It's kind of an odd place but I do really enjoy living here!

I like to watch rugby and soccer....I'm too uncoordinated to really play any sports but I did referee kickball for an adult league for a little while and that was a blast.

My favorite animal...that's a tough one. I have a soft spot for Bulldogs since I went to UGA, and I really love watching and reading about elephants and dolphins.

  • Also, how did you come up with your username?
  • @Sioux1986 - I'm from Wilmington (sorta)! I lived in Philly until I was 10 and then we moved to Wilmington and I lived there until I went to college. Some of my family still lives there and I'll be there for Christmas this year :)

I went to Pace University in NYC.

    @Sakalicious lives in DE also.

  • Yea, no, I'm totally NOT a math person. It's just not how my brain works. I am a writer - tell me to write an essay, and I can give you something pretty well written in no time at all. Ask me to do a simple math problem, and it will take me forever. I dated a guy a few years ago who was a civil engineer - he was ridiculously smart; he designed & built bridges. However, he couldn't use correct grammar to save his life. I'm talking basics, like the correct version of you're/your & there/their/they're. It was a constant argument. He "got" math & science. I "get" writing & grammar.

It's not that I just don't like math so I don't try - especially in my line of work where I'm dealing with sports statistics and stuff, trust me, I wish I could calculate a batting average or shooting percentage in my head. I try - but that part of my brain just isn't in control.

Sorry for the threadjack, but I was also annoyed.

I guess I also see those are very different things...and you'd never catch me using poor grammar if I can help it....or saying "Sorry I can't talk right or whatever, I'm not an 'english person'!!!" (which is not equivalent to what I think you're saying at all FWIW) The whole phrase "being a math person" or not is what really annoys me....not the idea that some people aren't gifted mathematicians. Trust me, calculating those kinds of stats in your head is not even what I'm thinking about when I hear that. I'm talking basic computation, mentally or not, and the whole attitude around math.

Besides, aren't pet peeves supposed to be what things annoy you personally, not universal truths?

    Hello!

Hahah he takes so long because he just piddles around....it's hard to put a finger on it, but I can be dressed with my makeup down and everything and he'll be still showering....

We are an urban school so the majority of our students are low income African American inner city kids. They are amazing, but unfortunately I get the side-eye when I'm out with a bunch of them. Trust me, they aren't perfect, but they are about as ranged in personality and behavior as any other school, regardless of race, class or location.
