awesome or lame?

Okay, so I am a very indecisive person about basically everything including my life. FI and I have been stuck on centerpieces for almost 10 months now. One we both liked now has me wondering if it will come of lame and not formal... but it would be fun... but idk if it's the vibe I want at my wedding or not.

The idea was: use a submerged LED light on the bottom then water beads in our wedding colors rotating tables (purple for one, blue for the next etc) and then have a wedding rubber duckie (it would be either a bride, groom, GM, BM, FG, or RB) floating on top of the water with rubber duckies around it. The ones around it would be a mixture of things such as: german (my degree/heritage), history (his degree/passion), penguins (fav hockey team), hockey players, patterned ones, love ones, beach ones (our theme/honeymoon/we live by the beach but the wedding won't be happening there), luau ones, and unicorns (inside joke between me and him from our 1st trip to gettysburg)... I love this idea and it would be fun and cheap. BUT now the more I think about it the more I'm becoming indecisive again.

I definitely want LED lights and the water beads... and I want something to float on the water.. but not a floating candle (mainly bc the wedding we just went to the candles all died before the reception even started)

Does the rubber duckie idea seem fun? or just stupid to have at a wedding.. The rest is formal. Any other ideas what I  could float on top? or put around the vase? The only thing I bought so far for the centerpieces were the vases because they are no longer going to carry the ones I wanted.

ETA: Not like this matters, but we were then thinking if people wanted to take the duckies home they could. They are not the favors though.

  • To me, rubber ducks kind of scream baby shower.

You could float fake/real flowers on top, perhaps?
Yeah, I guess that's my issue with it too. Though, Pittsburgh did have the giant duck in town for the Pirates play offs... lol which I think is one reason he likes it.

  • I'm not a fan.
What did you think would happen if you walked up to a group of internet strangers and told them to get shoehorned by their lady doc?~StageManager14

  • I'm not really a fan either. Kinda reminds me of a babyshower also. How about floating rose petals?

oh that could be cool.. i wonder where you'd find those though

  • Eh, no rubber duckies in my opinion. Seems a little too 'child's birthday party' to me. Right now it sounds a bit too theme-y and less wedding.

Couldn't you just have a nice floating flower or two? You could float rose buds or orchids. Alternate the flower colors perhaps? Then use the interests as table names of some sort although they seem pretty random and unrelated.

Looks like this one is a fake flower, I would do real ones:

  • I'm not a fan of the duck idea either.  Could you do something like this and fill the vases with the water beads? You could use LED tea lights instead of regular ones that way they wont burn out.

  • I thought of doing the LED ones or the bigger ones, but I just am not sure if I want that anymore. I do like the look of the blue lilly.. I wonder how they got it to stay submerged though.

I think since it's a fake lilly it's weighted so it sinks. I've seen them tied to fishing line with a small weight at the bottom too. You just cover the weight with the sea glass or pebbles.

Real rose petals will float. Or if u wax the fabric ones they will float.
  • If you cut off the stem the rose buds will float as well.

I like it but hard to say 100% without seeing it.  Duck popularity is at an all time high in Pittsburgh and I think guests will more likely associate them with the big duck art installation rather than a baby shower or something.  If people are allowed to take them home I think the guests that are interested will really like it.
  • Does all silk/fake flowers float? I might have to play with this idea a little. lol.

That's what I was thinking too @csuave, but at the same time I do want my wedding to be a formal thing :/

Fake flowers aren't made to float. You would have to coat them in wax in order to keep them afloat and I am not sure that would work for a full bud.

Real rose petals and real flowers most often float unless attached to a branch or stem which can cause them to sink.
  • I actually kinda like the idea, but I love rubber duckies, so I'm a bit biased.

We did the water beads with LED thing too. To put on top, I made candles (with wics that were supposed to be too short to light) in the shape of our initials, in purple. Each table had two vases- one in pink with my initial and one in blue with his initial (our favorite colors). Looked really cool.

  • If you're going to use fake flowers as well, make sure they're colorfast or they'll dye your water. Unless you want that.
  • I would think the rubber ducks were weird at a formal wedding, sorry.
  • Rubber ducks are cute, but I don't think they're right for a wedding.  @aefitz29 posted some nice pictures -- I especially like the top image (probably because it reminds me a little of the centerpieces I used)
  • Okay, here's another idea. What if I did flameless led floating candle on top, then colored water beads still and then the submerged led light under (lighting up the beads)? The reason I like the idea of lights is once the dancing starts- it goes pretty dark. Would I need something around the vase or just have the vase itself? I have colored tulle circles the vase would sit on.

    I like that idea.
  • I like the idea of the floating flameless candle more than the ducks. I would be a little confused if I walked into a reception and they had rubber ducks floating.

You could always put the vase onto a mirror. That would reflect the light and could look pretty. Maybe sprinkle a few glass beads on it. I think that would be pretty.
