Riviera Maya in Late September

We are getting married on 9/26 and are planning our honeymoon. We were thinking Riviera Maya and we were wondering how the weather is at that time of year... I am a little concerned about hurricanes, etc.Any suggestions/experiences?  We really don't want to go to Aruba, everyone is telling us that is the way to avoid the hurricanes, but there are not many all inclusive resorts and it is very expensive.

  • A) Get trip insurance in case of hurricanes or other major weather events
    B) Google is an amazing thing and you can find out a lot of great facts, even weather!  http://www.tripadvisor.com/Travel-g150812-s208/Playa-Del-Carmen:Mexico:Weather.And.When.To.Go.html

  • We went to Rivera Maya a few years ago in November and it was during Hurricane season.  I think you might be hitting the begining of Hurricane season during the end of September begining of October.

Don't let that stop you from going.  Buy trip insurance, it was worth it for us to have piece of mind.  I believe the people who made a week out of the trip had to leave one day later to avoid a hurricane and they were able to rearrange trips hassle-free and got refunds on the night not used.  We arrived a few days after the hurricane and there was no major damage, beach was clean.

You are in a tropical location and weather is quite common there.  Outside of the occasional hurricane I have never come across weather that lasted more than an hour or so.  It's beautiful down there in the fall.

  • We have been to Riviera Maya 2 different times (stayed at Barcelo Maya Palace both times). In 2012 we went in sept (weather is very hot but not horrible) and 2013 went middle october. The weather was amazing in october!  It rains sometimes there but the storms last maybe an hour and then its bright and sunny again. You will have an amazing time! Just make sure you buy travel insurance since that is hurricane season.
  • Yay! Thanks for the advice! We are definitely looking forward to it!
