Custom dress

Anyone ever had a dress made? As a gift my dad and stepmother told me they will have a dress made for me. Stepmom's good friend is a dressmaker and has made some really nice wedding gowns.

I don't even know how to begin this. I'm going to meet with her next week to go over some ideas.she wants me to bring pictures. At this point I don't know what I want. I can't picture myself in a wedding dress and have never dreamed of it.

I'm also still going dress shopping with plans to buy my own in case they don't come through financially. Or I will at least save the money I budgeted for a dress in case. Gifts make me nervous.

Re: Custom dress

  • Before having a dress made, I think you should go try dresses on to see what you like and dislike as well as whats look good on you, not the models.

For sure. I have an appointment with a salon next week.

  • def go to a few salons and try on different designers to see what looks good i tried on maggies, allures, mori lee julettas, and a few venus. my first gowns were mori lee's julietta line for plus and i loved 2 dresses then i went to a place and tried on maggies and allures but nothing could top the mori lee dress
  • I went to a bridal show today and think I like the look of a trumpet gown. I made some appointments at salons for Sunday next week so I'll see what looks good and take the ideas to her. I do feel bad going to the salons with no intention to buy. I'll need bridesmaid dresses though.
  • When you try the gowns on - make sure you can move in them and sit down!  I know when I went to try on shapes I really didn't like the feel of the trumpet/mermaids because how constricting they were (but that's me - plus they didn't look good on my frame).

  • you may fall in love with a dress at the salon and want that one instead of the custom gown
  • don't feel too bad about trying on dresses you won't buy--most girls go to so many salons that salons understand (or should understand) that most appointments don't lead to dresses. if you consider their bridesmaid's dresses, write a good review for their store online, or recommend them to an engaged friend, i think it's a fair use of their time.

i'm very big on, "you have no idea whether you'll like a dress until you try it on," so if it were me i would try on a TON of dresses until i found a dress that was perfect or almost perfect, and then ask her to make a replica of that one. if she's a talented wedding dress seamstress she should be able to do a pretty good replica.

  • I had a dress custom made by a designer whose other gowns I tried on, so I knew more or less how it would turn out. I would definitely try a lot of things on to see what shapes, styles, and colors you like first.
  • I'm afraid of that. @hyechica81 I don't want that to happen though. They didn't offer to buy me a dress, they offered to have it made. Having seen her work, I bet she could probably replicate it.
