Day of Hair and Make up

Hello all,

I'm sure this issue has been addressed before but I am thinking of doing my own makeup on my wedding day. I'm really, really comfortable  doing it myself and have done a lot of practicing. However, if I'm going to do it myself, what is the etiquette on my bridesmaids?

Do I have to pay for a makeup artist for them even if I'm not using one? Do I just hire a hairdresser and let them do their own makeup? I'm planning on getting ready with my bridesmaids at my parent's house before heading to the church so we'll all be together. I just feel bad making people do their own makeup.

My wedding isn't until September so I have some time to figure everything out but I'm just curious as to what other people do?

Thanks!

Re: Day of Hair and Make up

  • If you were having a makeup artist (the same goes for hairstylists BTW), you could offer to pay for the bridesmaids' makeup to be done (they could refuse if they wanted).  Also, you could say "Well, the make-up artist is going to to be doing mine, if any of you would like yours done, feel free to ask" and let them pay for it themselves if they choose to do so.   However, if you are doing your makeup yourself, I would leave the BMs to figure out their own makeup.

  • Thank you! I haven't been in a wedding as an adult so I didn't know if it was just expected now that you pay for a makeup artist for everyone. I don't want to be rude or look cheap for not getting one. I just feel more comfortable doing it myself and the fact that it cuts down on expenses doesn't hurt.

I don't mind paying for a hairdresser since I know some people (including myself) aren't as comfortable with that as they are with their own makeup.

Thanks again for taking the time to respond!

  • you do not need to pay for either hair or makeup for the bridesmaids.  i've been in a couple weddings and never had the bride pay (which was fine with me, i wasn't expecting them to).  For my bridesmaids I let them know where i was goign and offered to make the appointment for them if they wanted to go too, but didn't tell them wehre to go.  2 girls are getting their hair done with me, 1 on her own and they are all doing their own makeup..that was their choice.
  • You can find out what it would cost to have a make up artist & just let your BM know that you plan on doing your own make up but if they would prefer to have their's professionally done, you can arrange for a make up artist to come (I'm assuming it would be someone from same place hair stylist is from) and the cost per person would be $xx.xx. This gives anyone who may want theirs done professionally, the option to have it done, but they know in advance if it's an expense they want to take on themselves. O
