I judge...

Re: I judge...

  • My mom DOES NOT high five. She REFUSES! So it becomes a fun game where I encourage everyone to high five my mother when they first meet her.

Oddly, though, she will bump knuckles just fine. Haha.

I judge people who use tanning beds. I just don't get it. I don't think they're stupid, just skewed priorities.
Sorry, not sorry, I enjoy the warmth (I live in Seattle) and its my wind down time. I am not orange, but its a regulated way for me to get vitamin D that I otherwise don't get because of all our regular cloud cover.
I judge the state of Illinois for making tanning beds illegal for under 18's. You think they can't lay out on a beach? You think your nanny state policies can kill jobs for some faux sense of public safety? (By the way, I've never used a bed in my life because I'm a poster child for skin cancer risk, but I support personal freedom.)
If you're under 18 you can't legally buy cigs either, I think it's less nanny state and more 'what til you're of age before you start slowly killing yourself"

exposure to UV does not kill people. In fact, people who primarily work night shifts and people who don't get exposed to UV tend to have other medical problems such as bone density issues. Ask my FI who worked graveyards for YEARS and NEVER saw the sun. He has brittle bones and is at higher risk for osteoporosis.

I was recently diagnosed with low Vitamin D and the Dr. Prescribed 30 min of sun everyday without sunscreen!! Of course, I've also had two forms of skin cancer already, so this blew my mind. So, I tan because I pretty much to to follow dr's orders :)

I think tanning beds are okay as long as you are doing it a reasonable amount. Plenty of people are addicted to tanning which can be detrimental but it's the same with too much of anything. Moderation is a girl's best friend.

(I'm not a tanner myself but I can see the appeal).

They didn't suggest taking a Vitamin D supplement? That is what my friend did when she lived in Alaska.

Yes. I am on a prescription strength supplement. It was that bad apparently!! I work really long days and don't have any windows at work, plus I live in AZ so i'm never out in the summer when the sun is strongest.

  • Tanning beds give a much higher dose of UV than the sun, making the chance of skin cancer higher with the use of tanning beds over suntanning.  I also asked my Dr. once about tanning beds as treatment for seasonal affective disorder (SAD).  She said the health risk of skin cancer outweighed the benefits of the bed.

I've got a sunrise simulator alarm clock, which goes from red to orange to yellow to bright white over 30 minutes before the birds start chirping.  I also have a 10 000 lumens SAD light, which simulates the light of the sun along with blue sky.  I use it 30 minutes each day.  I have never felt this good in January.  I'm much less tired, irritable and moody, so I'd say it's helping.

And as someone who has already had surgery for skin cancer, you'd never get me anywhere near a bed.  Not worth it, nor are the wrinkles I'd eventually get.  I fully support them being banned for under 18's.  Most of those kids aren't tanning for health reasons.  They're tanning to look "prettier".

Ooh where did you find such a clock??

I don't compare this ban to cigarettes because although the beds are stronger, kids/teens will still lay outside for hours in the summer and yet I doubt they're finding tobacco plants and making their own cigarettes (unless they're really industrious, I don't know). It seems pointless to ban a business from selling services that people can get/do on their own. Just because I can paint my own nails doesn't mean I don't want to pay a business to do it better. Is Illinois going to regulate the community pools so all under 18's must use SPF 45 and spend no more than 2 hours a day outside so they don't put themselves at risk of cancer? Slippery, pointless slope.

As for tanning, I know kids are going to tan, just as they're going to find cigarettes and alcohol younger than 18.  Tanning can kill you just like smoking can and even though many people are going to do it anyway, I believe it's our job to protect kids from dangerous situations until thy are old enough to make informed decisions for themselves.  Though many 18+ people can't/don't make informed decisions, society says they're old enough to.

Most kids who tan don't think enough ahead to realize the potential health risks, just as when they're drinking they're not thinking that binge drinking can lead to an OD, or that smoking can kill them eventually as well (or at least lead to a shitty health situation).  I believe it's our job to make some of these decisions for kids as well as educating them so that when they are old enough, they can make these decisions for themselves.  Sure, some will decide to do it, but that is then their choice.  By 18, they're should be able to make informed decisions about their lifestyle, and live with the positive or negative consequences of their actions and decisions
