Wedding Woes

Red and Blue, but no 4th of July

Hey guys,
My fiance and I have decided that we would like our favorite colors to be the wedding colors. Problem is that it's Red and Blue and everyone that I have talked about it with has kept saying "Oh a Red White and Blue wedding!" Here's the thing. 1) Our wedding will be on June 28th, 2015 so it's not on 4th of July, 2) My birthday is on July 3rd and as much as I love the 4th of July, every birthday was mostly overshadowed by the 4th of July (imagine having birthday parties be a week before or later so it didn't conflict with the Holiday or not having friends over because their familes had holiday plans).

Anyway, Other than throwing in a third color (we were thinking a pale light blue) could there be other ways to make these colors work? Also my dress will be Red and White.  Attached are the colors that we were thinking.

Re: Red and Blue, but no 4th of July

  • Probably no.  Those colors don't really look so hot together, IMO.

  • It might work if you use one color as your primary color and the other just as an accent.  For example, if blue was the dominant color you used for linens, bridal party wear, etc., you could use red roses in the bouquets/bouts and centerpieces.  I do think it would be hard to use the colors in equal portions and not have people thinking it's a red, white and blue wedding.

why don't you google "blue wedding" and see what the photos look like. there are many shades of blue besides navy. you can limit red to flowers. at least, that was the first thing i thought of. is there a wedding decor board?

are there any other color combinations that make you happy aside from red and blue?

ok i just read that your dress is red and white.

sorry. at the risk of sounding like a snit, a red and white dress with blue decor is going to make me think of the american flag. if you don't like that look, i would consider eliminating blue altogether. just my opinion.

you can use aqua or teal instead of navy to make it less july 4th and more summer. red and aqua will always be a favorite color combinaiton of mine.

  • Oh dear.  These pictures are horrific!

  • I ditto PPs -- with those colours, and as close to the holiday as it is, people are going to think "red, white, and blue, Fourth of July!" It's just ingrained in us, sorry.

If you lighten the blue to a cornflower or azure or other pale blue, or add green and make it turquoise, and limit the red to accent colours in flowers and shoes, you could probably minimise the patriotic feeling of the colour scheme.

I'm gonna go with 'not my circus, not my monkeys.'
  • Here are some more pictures of blue and red weddings:

  • I do think red and blue can look nice together, but given that your date is so close to July 4, it's going to look like you did intend a patriotic wedding.
  • I have attended 2 military weddings where the color schemes were red, white, and blue.  One was gorgeous, the other looked like a 4th of July picnic and you could see the horror on the bride's face when she saw how it all came together.

The one that was gorgeous used red as the main color with very small pops of blue here and there.  It was stunning.

The horrorific one used equal amounts of red, white, and blue and it looked like a 4th of July picnic.  I felt really bad for her because she was trying to honor her husband's service and really didn't think how it would all come together.  To say her vision became a reality is a big fat lie.  You couldn't help but feel bad for her.

Above gave good suggestions of having one color as an accent color. Also if it has a more upscale feel then a picnic feel that could help too

  • Thanks guys.
I think I may make red more of an accent since I will probably be the only one in a red and white dress. And I will probably add a light blue to the mix to help.
    Thank you so much.
Now, I will have to find my dress!
  • My mom's birthday is on the 4th of July so I totally understand where you are coming from. However, if having a birthday around a holiday is a peeve of yours... why would you schedule your wedding for a week before the very holiday you loath for raining on your birthday parade?

    Just wondering...
